Air Force To Commission Eight Lieutenants During UH Ceremony

Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) Detachment 003 at the University of Houston (UH) will commission eight of its cadets as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force (USAF) at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 16.  The commissioning ceremony will be held at the UH M.D. Anderson Library in the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion and will consist of the oath of service, the ceremonial pinning of the second lieutenant rank insignia and comments by Col. Phil Bossert, USAF, detachment commander of the program.

The ceremony marks many firsts for Detachment 003.  It will celebrate its first commissioning of students from the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) and Texas Southern University (TSU), including the first pilot candidate from TSU.  We will also be commissioning two graduates from the UH Law Center, who will be entering the USAF Judge Advocate General (JAG) corps.

The following cadets will be commissioned May 16:

Erik Perez, Santa Fe, N.M., UH, Intelligence Officer
Joshua Wendell, Houston, Texas, UH, Judge Advocate General
Troy Taylor, Duncanville, Texas, UH, Judge Advocate General
Charlotte Russell, Heidelberg, Germany, UH, Intelligence Officer
Travis Hollin, Pasadena, Texas, UH, Logistics Officer
John Thurman, DeSoto, Texas, UH, Acquisitions Officer
Philip McCombs, Webster, Texas, UHD, Intelligence Officer
Marvin Weatherspoon, Houston, Texas, TSU, Pilot

Detachment 003 was established in 2003 and is among the fastest growing AFROTC units in the nation. It is recognized nationally for having the most active ROTC flying program, the first senior-level war game with ROTC cadets and civilian students, the only unit to have hosted multiple Department of Defense research conferences, and the first and only unit to establish a series of leadership seminars taught by military and university professors. The goal is to provide cadets the education and training necessary to become second lieutenants in the USAF.  The AFROTC program serves students at UH, Rice University, TSU, University of St. Thomas, UHD, Houston Baptist University, Houston Community College, University of Texas Health Sciences Center and 12 other colleges throughout the Houston metro area.
