College of Education Alum Reaching New Heights
College of Education (UHCOE) graduate and University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) faculty member Bernardo Pohl continues to show the heights that can be reached from hard work and experience.
Pohl, who received both an M.Ed. and Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction Social Studies/Social Education at the UHCOE first began his work at UHD as an adjunct in the Urban Education Department. After he received his doctorate, he was promoted to assistant professor. “We are so lucky to have Dr. Pohl at UHD,” says Dr. Myrna Cohen associate dean of the College of Public Service. “He possesses an outstanding ability to inspire, connect, and enrich our students, and after he joined our faculty, it became clear to me that he likewise inspires, connects and enriches his colleagues as well. Bernardo is an amazing addition to our academic community as he collaborates and brings fresh ideas and motivation to our mission.”
Though he had been teaching prior to earning his doctorate, studying at UHCOE not only honed his skills, it helped him find his passion – social justice and social education. To that end, Pohl credits UH COE Department of Curriculum & Instruction professor Cameron White for instilling a love of social justice and academia. “Dr. White helped me so much,” says Pohl, “from presenting in conferences to publishing. He took me under his wings and made me the professional that I am today. I don’t have enough words to describe his influence in my life.”
Similarly, White praises his former student for the work he’s done and the strides he’s made in the community. “Dr. Bernardo Pohl is the personification of a social educator,” says White. “He is passionate, knowledgeable, and demonstrates great caring. It is a great pleasure to work for equity and social justice with Dr. Pohl.”
Pohl is now in demand, teaching at UHD as well as writing for and editing various journals. His background as both a student and a professor in Education allows him to provide fascinating multiple perspectives in his narrative inquiry. The College of Education is excited to see what accomplishments Pohl has in store for the future.
