Psychology Program Ranks among Nation’s Best

The UH doctoral program in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology was ranked among the top programs in the nation in studies published by the American Psychological Association’s Division 14, the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, published on March 26. The program ranked highly in research development opportunities for doctoral students, overall program quality based on student perceptions, and interdisciplinary research.

I/O psychologists contribute profoundly to the world of work as we know it. They work to improve the health, well-being and productivity of workers through research and evidence-based intervention.

I/O psychology is among the fastest growing disciplines within psychology; individuals with degrees in the field work in research and consulting functions and are highly sought after.

Development opportunities: The UH program was ranked No. 9 nationally for both research development opportunities and applied development opportunities.

Overall program: For I/O graduate program rankings based on student perceptions, we ranked No. 15 in PhD programs overall. Criteria for calculating the programs included faculty quality, expertise and research interests; student support by faculty and/or department; and learning practical skills.

Interdisciplinary research: We ranked No. 15 among programs both for raw I/O publication counts and by raw interdisciplinary publication counts. “Our impressive ranking for interdisciplinary research is no small feat,” explains Dr. Christiane Spitzmueller, professor of I/O psychology, “given we have a relatively small program; although being in Houston certainly helps us connect with medical researchers and interdisciplinary teams.”
