Biography
Dr. Wei-Kan Chu, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor in Physics and Research Director of Texas center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston received his B.S. from National Cheng Kung University in 1962, and Ph. D from Baylor University in 1969. Currently, he is the Research Director of Texas Center for Superconductivity at University of Houston (TCSUH). TCSUH is one of the leading research centers on Material research with emphasis on High Temperature Superconductors, on Nano Science and on Energy materials. Dr. Wei-Kan Chu’s professional experience includes Welch Professor (2003-08), Deputy Director of Research (89-97) at TCSUH, a Research Professor of Physics at the University of North Carolina (81-89), a Staff, Advisory, and Senior Engineer at IBM (75-81), a Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at CALTECH (72-75). A fellow of the American Physical Society, he is the author of one book (Backscattering Spectrometry) and the editor of four books, and has authored or co-authored over 375 journal publications, over 100 invited talks and 27 US-patents to date. He has advised 26 students who have obtained their PhD and currently has 3 students working toward their PhD. His research interest is related to Ion Beam Characterization of Materials and Ion Beam Modification of Materials such as ion implantation in semiconductors. He is also an expert on High Temperature Superconductors in the area of HTS Thin Film studies, HTS-magnetic Bearing and Levitation Flywheels. Recently, he extends his ion beam activities into nano science and technology. He received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of American-Chinese Professionals (1994). He received The Distinguished Achievement Award from Baylor University, Waco, Texas (1991), Superconductivity Award of Excellence for Outstanding Individual Accomplishment by the World Congress on Superconductivity (1994), ISTEC/MRS International Workshop on Superconductivity, Material/Device Performance Awards (1995,1997), 1997 "Outstanding Alumni" award from National Cheng Kung University North America Alumni Foundation Inc., and the 1998 "Distinguished Alumni" award from National Cheng Kung University.
