Samuel Dye, Son of John Dye, Sr.

Samuel Dye was born February 2, 1780 in Pr. William Co., VA and died September 26, 1860 in Lawrence, Washington Co., Ohio. Many of the early Dye's in Wahsington County were buried in the Dye Cemetery (red dot on the map to the right.) Ezekiel Dye, Sr. was his uncle.

Samuel Dye married Susan Hoff before 1799 in Prince William Co., VA. [Susan Hoff was born in 1776 in Prince William County, Virginia and died on December 13, 1847 in Lawrence, Washington Co., Ohio. She was the sister of Hanna Hoff who married Samuel's half-brother John Dye 2. Susan Hoff is listed as the second daughter and sixth child of Rev. Daniel Hoff, a farmer near Alexandria, VA.

Samuel Dye was a man of eccentric appearance. in cold weather a long cloak, covered with shorter capes, the number depending on the temperature, protected his tall and corpulent body, He was always in good humor and called everybody "bub" which gave him the nickname "bub Sam". The electors of his township made him justice of the peach for thirty one consecutive years. He was known as "Esquire Dye" among the early settlers. He was a very large, corpulent man, and quite sympathetic in his nature. He died at his residence on the Woodsfield road, nine miles from Marietta, in 1860.

Samuel and Susan had 10 children:

  1. John Hoff Dye - born in 1799 in Virginia. He married Eliza O'Blennis

  2. Hannah Dye - born in 1802 in Prince William County, VA and died May 4, 1840 in Washington Co., Ohio. She married Joseph Caywood (related to her grandmother?, second wife of John Dye)

  3. Sophia Dye - born in 1803 in Virginia (Prince William County?) and died in 1868 in Washington Co., Ohio. She married Amos Dye, the son of Ezekiel Dye, Sr. in 1825 in Renrock, Ohio. Ezekiel would have been her great uncle. She died in Lawence County, Ohio.

  4. Mary Dye - born about 1808 and died in Washington Co., Ohio. Married Ezekiel Reed.

  5. Ann Dye - born 1811 in Washington Co., Ohio and died in Washington Co., Ohio. She married William Templeton.

  6. Jonathan Dye - born 1813 in Washington Co., Ohio and died in Washington Co., Ohio

  7. James Hoff Dye - born 1815 in Washington Co., Ohio and died in 1880 in Washington Co., Ohio. He was born on the Little Muskingum river in Lawrence Township. At the age of 14 he entered the tanning business in Marietta. In 1837 he married Clarissa Jackson. In 1862 he disposed of his tanning interests and became suttler for the Seventh Ohio cavalry. In 1864 he purchased a livery stable in Marietta which he continued to manage until his death in 1880. He was very social in his habits and sympathetic in his disposition.
