Solution: (a) MgCl 2has Mg 2+ and Cl ñ ions: ionic forces; PCl 3 has polar molecules: intermolecular dipole-dipole forces. Ionic forces are stronger, so MgCl 2 has a higher boiling point.
(b) CH 3NH 2 and CH 3F are polar molecules of similar molar mass.
CH 3NH 2 has NñH bonds so it forms H bonds. CH 3 F has no HñF bond, so no H bonds. Thus CH 3NH 2 has the higher boiling point.
(c) CH 3OH and CH 3CH 2OH both form H bonds. CH 3CH 2OH has a larger molar mass, stronger dispersion forces, and so a higher boiling point.
