• In different molecules with the same shape, the nature of the  atoms surrounding the central atom can affect polarity.

• Consider carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4) and chloroform (CHCl 3), two tetrahedral molecules with different polarities.

In CHCl3, an H atom replaces a Cl atom, disruptingthe balance, giving chloroform a dipole moment ( _= 1.01 D)
