Bond Polarity, Bond Angle, and Dipole Moment
- Polar bonds do not always lead to a polar molecule!
- In CO2 the electronegativity difference between C and O makes each C=O bond polar.
- Because its bonds are directed 180° apart, the identical bond polarities in CO 2 are counterbalanced; CO 2 is nonpolar overall.
- Water also has identical atoms bonded to the central atom, but it does have a dipole moment ( _= 1.85 D) due to its shape.
- The bond polarities do not counterbalance each other because the water molecule is V shaped.
