• The VSEPR model explains the molecular shapes-bond angles and bond lengths—observed through various types of spectroscopy.

Molecular Shape: Two Electron Groups

• The minimum repulsion of two electron groups occurs when they  lie on opposite sides of the central atom in a straight line.

• The VSEPR shape class is AX 2 for such linear molecules.

Gaseous beryllium chloride (BeCl 2) is an example of a linear molecule.

• In carbon dioxide, the carbon is surrounded by two double bonds:

Each double bond acts as a separate electron group.
