Health Professions Advisory Committee

The Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) consists of 15 University of Houston faculty and staff from across the campus, representing virtually every UH college.

Going through review by HPAC is required of all premedical and predental students at the University of Houston.  There is an expectation by TMDSAS (the Texas application service for medical and dental schools) that all students who attend a school with an advisory committee (like UH) will use that advisory committee for pre-evaluation and the production of a committee letter that will accompany the students application to professional school. HPAC evaluates the students’ academic and biographical records to give a collective, professional recommendation for those UH students.

The HPAC issues its consensus recommendation in a letter that becomes part of the student's pre-med/pre-dent file. At the student's request, this letter is forwarded along with the student's letters of recommendation to the professional schools designated by the applicant. Copies of the HPAC letter will not be made available to the applicant. Again, HPAC review is mandatory for all qualified UH premedical and predental students.

Do you think you are ready to apply to medical or dental school? You probably need to learn more about applying to Medical or Dental school and make sure you understand what you are getting into. Once you feel confident that you are ready, check to make sure you understand the HPAC process and that you have met the requirements for an HPAC review. You’ll need to meet with an advisor to open an application file before you begin, but once you do, the process should be pretty straightforward.
