UH Energy and the Energy Coalition Begin Certificate in Energy Leadership

By McKenzie Ganders

The University of Houston maintains its goal to prepare students for professions in energy through learning crucial skills needed for success in the marketplace.

With this in mind, UH Energy and the Energy Coalition are pleased to announce the Certificate in Energy Leadership. This four-part webinar opportunity provides insights to critical skills such as team-building and leadership, and is aimed toward those currently in and aspiring to work within the energy industry.

Alan Rossiter, executive director of external relations for UH Energy, stated that the reasoning behind this unique educational development opportunity is to share pertinent knowledge to current and future energy professionals from industry peers.

“Experience is incredibly valuable,” said Rossiter. “Through the webinars, participants will gain an insider understanding of the marketplace – what it is like to work in it, how it is changing, and how you can thrive in it.”

Students will gain the inside scoop from energy professionals specializing in leadership: Chad Covey at Spencer Stuart, Saurabh Chaugule at Shell, and Kay McCall at Renewable Energy Alliance Houston.

While the webinar series cannot provide UH credits, it will bring students a competitive advantage as they make their way into the marketplace.

Energy Coalition Chair Neha Bhat shared the benefits of an educational opportunity like this one before entering the workforce, stating that “…arguably the biggest skillset employers search for in potential candidates is a display of leadership. Not only does this certificate look good on a resume, but it will give students insights to the soft skills necessary to become a leader in the energy space from the 5 C’s (Compatibility, Career, Capabilities, Capacity and Character) to shaping the industry.”

Rossiter clarified that though the webinar is open to all, the actual certification is an added benefit only available to current UH students. In order to attend, participants must pre-register on the course website located here, after which they will receive the Zoom link set for all four webinars. UH students must attend three of the four webinars and pass online tests to receive the certificate.

“We believe this program offers great value to our students, and we plan to continue offering opportunities like this in the future,” said Rossiter.
