House Bill 5 (HB5) is a new state mandate aimed at ensuring Texas students have appropriate resources and support to graduate college and career ready. As per HB5, students will have more options in choosing their course of study, which will prepare them for their future collegiate studies and career paths.
Endorsements are the personal part of your high school experience. They are similar to majors in college – the subjects that one is most interested and well-versed in - that will give students specialized knowledge and skills. This repertoire is meant to prepare students for higher education and careers. Endorsements will be offered in 5 content areas, depending on the high school:
This year! The new graduation plans and changes to credit requirements go into effect with the freshman class of 2014-15.
As per HB5, a College Preparatory Course (CPC) must be offered to high school seniors who have demonstrated that they are not college-ready. This CPC will be offered in the areas of English/Language arts and mathematics. In addition, HB5 specifies that independent school districts (ISD) must partner with at least one Higher Education institution for the development of the course.
MOU stands for Memorandum of Understanding. The purpose of an MOU in this case is to outline the collaboration of the parties involved in creating College Preparatory Courses in Mathematics and English Language Arts for high school students who have not demonstrated college readiness. It's essentially an agreement, not as strong as a formal contract.
