Student Success Summit 2015
The 2015 Student Success Summit, sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, was hosted on July 14-15, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, just east of Austin, TX.
Summit Information
The Student Success Summit offered access to national and regional speakers and program resources in support of student success in higher education. The summit featured keynote speakers and engaged participants in breakout sessions, interactive plenaries, and networking opportunities to explore and exchange models of practice and evidence-based strategies focused on specific strands, which will include:
- Peer-to-Peer Instructional Support Models and Interventions
- Minority Student Success Strategies
- Course Transformation and Student Engagement Practices
- Guided Pathways
Higher education participants including faculty, academic affairs staff, student services personnel, and administrators from institutions across Texas are encouraged to attend.
Keynote and Plenary Speaker

Vasti Torres, PhD |
Vasti Torres is Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Prior to the Dean position she was Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Director of the Center for Postsecondary Research (CPR) in the School of Education at Indiana University. Before becoming a faculty member, she had 15 years of experience in administrative positions most recently serving as Associate Vice Provost and Dean for Enrollment and Student Services at Portland State University. She has been the Principal Investigator for several grants including a multi-year grant investigating the choice to stay in college for Latino students as well as a multi-year grant looking at the experiences of working college students. She has worked on several community college initiatives including Achieving the Dream, Rural Community College Initiative, and Building Engagement and Attainment for Minority Students initiative. Currently she is the Associate Editor of the Journal of College Student Development. She is active in several higher education and student affairs associations and in 2007 – 2008 she became the first Latina president of a national student services association – ACPA. She has been honored as a Diamond Honoree, Senior Scholar, Wise Woman, and the Latino Network John Hernandez Leadership Award by the American College Personnel Association. Other honors include the Contribution to Literature and Knowledge Award from NASPA, Professional Achievement Alumni Award from the University of Georgia, and Program Associate for the National Center for Policy in Higher Education. In 2008 she received the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. In 2011-2012 she served as a Fulbright Specialist in South Africa. Dr. Torres is a graduate of Stetson University and holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Affairs Administration from The University of Georgia. |

Registration
For confirmed registrants, registration was free and hotel guest room charges (excluding incidentals) were covered by THECB grant for one night (July 14) for a maximum of 4 participants per institution. Event organizers arranged room reservations directly with the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa on behalf of those confirmed registered for the Summit. Instructions regarding hotel reservations were sent directly to registered participants.
Summit Hotel Information
The Summit was held at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa. Hotel guestroom charges (excluding incidentals) were covered by THECB grant for one night (July 14) for a maximum of 4 participants per institution. Room reservations were made directly with the Hyatt by event organizers on behalf of registered Summit participants. Further information regarding reservation details were included in registration communications sent to registered participants.
