The training consists of three certificates:

Certificate Level 1: Fundamentals in Maritime Business (5 Units)

Module 1

Unit (1) Maritime Industry – An Overview

This unit offers an overview of each element and dimension of the global maritime industry. The role of maritime as a facilitator of trade is reviewed. The key maritime principles and theories are identified, including global trade routes and commodities. Participants will examine the global business and economic impact of maritime trade and transport.

Unit (2) Ship Types and Sizes
Participants will become familiar with management considerations including the purpose, benefits and particularities of different ship types, sizes, designs, and construction features. They will also understand the strategic decision making of owning and operating specific types of ships. Commercial considerations including global trade routes.

Unit (3) Maritime Economics
This section covers the market cycles and key theories of maritime economics and explains the key principles that drive the global market. Participants will evaluate the decision-making process of selecting transportation as the link, which holds the global markets together. Cost-optimization and value-added considerations will be enhanced by the use of case studies. Strategic cost analysis and rate basis decisions will be analyzed, seeking optimum value for ship owners and cargo owners.

Unit (4) Chartering Management, Negotiations & Contracts
The process of chartering and shipbroking practices will be analyzed. Negotiations, fixtures, and post-fixtures. Voyage estimations. The role of shipbrokers in optimizing revenue for ship owners and cargo owners. Charter party types, and key shipping terminology.

Unit (5) Maritime Operations, Intermediaries and Documentation
The role of maritime operators in fulfilling the chartering promise. Day-to-day operational activities. Cargo Planning: Capacity and general arrangement planning Deadweight scales, Stowage planning.

Certificate Level 2: International Shipping Certificate (4 Units)

Module 2:

Unit (6) Port & Terminal Management

Ports as facilitators of global – and regional trade and transport. Port management and concession agreements. Private vs. public Terminal Management. The role of seaports as hub networks. Pilots and Tugs. Port logistics, hinterland connectivity, multimodal transportation.  Port design and future port trends.

Unit (7) Global Maritime Intermediaries

This unit covers the role of global maritime intermediaries including Ship Managers, Banking and Investment Institutions, Ship Agents, Classification Societies, Bunkering Brokers, Crew Managers, Suppliers, Inspectors, and others.

Unit (8) Ship Technical Management & Inspections

The duties of technical managers. Technical considerations including ship performance. Shipbuilding, designs, classifications, flags, and inspection processes. Charterer vetting and acceptability for dry and liquid products. Vetting inspections and questionnaires. Operational and Technical particularities including modern ship designs and ship parts will be provided. 

Unit (9) Maritime Law 
This unit is an essential guide for Maritime Law, including the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA), Lex Mercatoria, Hague-Visby Rules. Limitation of liability. The International Convention Regarding Bills of Lading. Certificate Level 3: Advanced International Maritime Business Certificate (3 Units)

Module 3:

Unit (10) Insurance and Claims

This session offers a robust presentation of Maritime Insurance and Claims and the career paths. The duties of insurance brokers, underwriters and claims agents. Cases will familiarize students with maritime insurance, incidents and claims scenarios.

incidents including crew injury, explosion, fire, collision, grounding, salvage operations, cargo damage.

Unit (11) Maritime Regulations

This unit covers some of the mandatory international and U.S. regulations, including safety, security, environment, quality, ballast water, etc.  The “safety first” motto. Cases will offer a walkthrough to scenarios of non-compliance, as well as the commercial and market implications.

Unit (12) Maritime Executive: The Capstone Project

This is the Capstone Project of the Certification, where students pursue group or individual research on a topic of their interest.

Prof. Burns will offer problem-solving and process-improving sessions while teaching participants how to convert industry challenges into opportunities.

Students have two options to complete the project:

Option 1: Online completion, through group video calls.

Option 2: Students join networking events and field trips relevant to their Capstone Project.
