Bike Share Program Expands to UH Community

The University of Houston has partnered with Houston BCycle to install numerous bike share stations around campus.

Although they can be used for short trips across campus, the bicycles are intended to connect students, staff, faculty and visitors to the growing network of BCycle stations across the city. A map of those stations is available online

Bringing a bike share program to UH has been a year-long collaboration with Houston Bike Share and supported through a federal grant provided to Houston City Council.

At UH, BCycle stations have been installed at Student Center North, Cougar Place, Technology Bridge (formerly ERP), and Cougar Village I. Two others are under construction near the Fine Arts Building and the Welcome Center Student Garage/Metro Station.

UH Office of Sustainability Manager Michael Mendoza hopes the program will cut down on single-occupant vehicles traveling to campus.

“By connecting to the bike share system already expanding around the city, the UH community has convenient access to city destinations and safe alternative transportation via the expanding citywide network of bikeways and trails,” said Mendoza.

Students, staff, faculty and visitors can try the bikes out at the stations for a fee of $3 per 30 minutes.

Unlimited memberships are available at Houston BCycle's website for $9/month, $25/semester, or $99/year.

Membrs can take as many trips as they want throughout the entire Houston BCycle network. Members are charged overage fees for any rides over 60 minutes, and can track their trips and health data on the BCycle mobile app.

To highlight accessible destinations close to campus, including Herman Park, Houston Zoo and Discovery Green, Office of Sustainability staff created downloadable route maps connecting the campus to locations around the city. These maps, as well as additional information about the BCycle program, can be found at uh.edu/bcycle.
