Mu Chapter Information

In the Summer of 1990, Frank Yeverino was working through an internship program in Washington, D.C. While there he came into contact with Brother Juan Rodriguez, Founding Father of the Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta. Juan Rodriguez and others such as Founding Father Baltzar Mendoza introduced him to Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. Later that summer, he was proudly initiated and the vision of expansion in Texas was planted.
In the Fall of 1990, that vision came to the University of Houston. Brother Frank Yeverino had returned to continue his college career and became friends with Abel Garza. Abel was later introduced to Frank's younger Brother Alex Yeverino. At age, 19 and 20, respectively, Alex and Abel were inducted as associate members of Sigma Lambda Beta. In March of 1991, they crossed, establishing the University of Houston as the first settlement of Sigma Lambda Beta in Texas.
Abel and Alex became roommates and met up with what would later be the Beta line: Clayton Simms, Hugo Navarro, John Vitela and Leo DeForrest. They were all good friends, but most importantly they were all officers of MASO and very active on campus and in the community. It was with these Chicano/Latino men and those soon after that the foundation of the Mu Chapter was created.
The years leading up to 1995, Sigma Lambda Beta was a big presence on campus and in Latino organizations such as MASO and Mecha. It was the goal of those Brothers to keep quality a higher priority over quantity. Therefore, from 1995 to 1997, the fraternity chose to concentrate on their involvement on campus and co-sponsorships with other organizations. Inadvertently, new membership ceased. However, after realizing that Brothers were graduating and/or moving onto their respective careers, a push was put for recruitment. Brothers Hugo Navarro, Fred Farrias, Adrian Chavez, Arturo Padilla and others began re-establishing contact with Nationals and working on re-petitioning for colony status.
After coming into contact with the UH Brothers, Alumni Brother Jomo Castro of the University of Indiana advised the fraternity on its goal of continuing the legacy of Sigma Lambda Beta. Five individuals: John Morales, Jorge Escatellinguez, Fernando Garcia, Enrique Huerta and Manuel Ortega, became associate members on October 2nd 1997. On December 20th 1997, L.F.U. crossed marking the re-birth of Sigma Lambda Beta at the University of Houston and the first new Blood, since 1994.
As feared, many Brothers graduated that Fall semester, the Mu colony took on a new image due to new ties and younger Brothers. However, the foundation had never faltered and the hard work of rebuilding was excepted. The Mu colony started to become more involved with other organizations, such as H.S.A. and La Comunidad, while continuing bonds with other organizations. Recruitment has continued and the Brotherhood as grown and the quality as still been kept to this day.
So, due to the vision in 1991 and the rebirth in 1997 and all the hard work in between and thereafter, the Mu Chapter was re-established on May 20th 2000. And with that a new DREAM, a dream that only the Brothers of the "Off The Gancho" Mu will know...
