Accounting

Studies in Accountancy & Taxation prepare students for measuring and analyzing the income, costs, sources and uses of funds of an organization on the basis of certain generally accepted principles. Such measurements and analyses are helpful to those directly responsible for attaining production, marketing and financial objectives. The goals of the undergraduate program in accounting are to provide graduates with the ability to: Record, analyze, and interpret financial and other information, Identify and diagnose accounting problems, Communicate business information in a clear and concise manner, Recognize ethical and regulatory dilemmas, and Demonstrate an understanding of accounting and financial concepts.

Major Change Requirements:

  • All the majors in business are admitted first as Pre-business based on the following admission requirements:
    • 3.0 Cumulative GPA including any attempted transfer work, and a 2.5 UH GPA.
    • UH students who do not meet the requirements to change their major to pre-business by the end of the semester in which they complete 45 or more hours are not eligible to change their major to pre-business.
    • 30 or more semester hours of college credit with grades must be completed (but no more than 45 hours, as stated in the second point).
    • AP coursework will not count towards the 30 credit hour minimum requirement or 45 credit hour maximum limit.

Advertising

American Sign Language and Interpreting

The University of Houston American Sign Language Interpreting (ASLI) program is designed to prepare undergraduates to develop translation and interpretation skills when working between American Sign Language and spoken or written English. Interpreters work in a vast array of settings such as: K-12 classrooms, post-secondary institutions, governmental agencies, public sector venues, courtrooms, medical venues, public service meetings, media outlets and video relay services (VRS telephone calls).

Anthropology

The Anthropology Program in the Comparative Cultural Studies Department focuses on archaeology and ethnology as specialized areas of study. A diverse curriculum provides courses in the major subfields of ethnology, archaeology, linguistics, and physical anthropology as well as in the study of important world regions, such as the United States, North America, Latin America, and Africa. Specialized courses are offered in medical anthropology, applied anthropology, historic archaeology, nutrition, sexuality, economic development, ethnic studies in the United States, and cultural reconstruction from symbolic behavior.

Applied Music

Music majors generally pursue instruction in only one performance area. Occasionally, requests for concurrent study in a secondary area are approved. Nonmajors are encouraged to seek private instruction through the School's Preparatory and Continuing Studies Program but, with approval of the School's director, are allowed to enroll in private lessons for credit. Architecture

Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design offers a Bachelor of Architecture, enabling students to pursue licensure after completing degree requirements. The Bachelor of Architecture is a five-year professional degree. Design is the focus of undergraduate studies and provides students with access to resources involving research, building, and community components. Students gain hands-on experience in studio courses with guidance from experienced faculty.

Art

This degree program is designed for those students who want to combine a broad-based liberal arts education with an expanded study of contemporary studio art practices. Students will experience the visual arts through a variety of disciplines, approaches, and tools, gaining the skills and languages to extend the possibilities of visual expression. The study of art history, criticism and theory will complement studio work by providing the contexts for historical and contemporary art production. Because it is a BA degree, students study foreign language and take a variety of courses from departments through the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Fulfilling a minor program is a popular option and gives the student the opportunity to pursue a field of individual interest. Teacher certification is also an option in this content area. Art History is the study of visual cultural production, and seeks to combine both visual and verbal experience. Beginning with a visual object and its historical context, Art History is an inherently interdisciplinary field that also draws on the rich intellectual traditions of anthropology, literary theory, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and history for interpretation. Art history was established as an academic discipline in Europe and the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Art historians work in both universities and museums and typically study art in its broader cultural and intellectual context.

Biomedical engineers solve problems in biology and medicine, playing a central role in advancing healthcare, medicine and patient care. Biotechnology

The Bachelor of Science Program in Biotechnology is intended to provide students with strong core science concepts and an application-oriented undergraduate education. Strongly interdisciplinary, this innovative program strives to help students develop critical-thinking skills and increased interest and /or persistence in STEM related courses. The program's objective is to prepare students for employment opportunities in the critically important and dynamic biotechnology industry. In addition, the curriculum will provide students with knowledge and core set of skills that span across basic sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. With an emphasis on environmental biotechnology, this is the first program in the state of Texas that integrates bioprocessing, nanobiotechnology, bioinformatics and environmental biotechnology into the undergraduate curriculum.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers are taught to link chemistry and engineering in order to produce substances or products that improve people's lives. Chemical engineers develop techniques and processes to convert raw materials into products such as chemicals, plastics, food, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products and other consumer goods while maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk and environmental impact.

Chinese Studies

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

Chinese is one of the world's most important languages: over one billion people, or fifteen percent of the world's population, speak Chinese as a native language. The Chinese studies program at the University of Houston has offered a Major (Bachelor of Arts in Chinese studies) since 2007. It has offered a Minor in Chinese Studies since 1998. In addition, the program has provided a faculty-led Summer Study Abroad Program since 2002. Thanks to generous donors and support from local institutions, we are pleased to offer four annual scholarships: The Shang-Zhih & Lucia Lee Wu Study Abroad Scholarship, Excellence in Chinese Studies, Excellence in Graduate Chinese Studies, and Chinese Government Scholarships via the Consulate General of PRC in Houston. In addition, the Chinese Studies Program offers a teacher training program and a guest lecture series. We have organized the Startalk Texas Teaching Program at UH, a federally funded program, from 2012 to 2015. The Chinese studies program annually graduates 13 Chinese majors on average. Many of the graduates work in China, Chinese speaking countries, and in the greater Houston area as instructors, business staff, and translators.

The civil engineering undergraduate program is designed to offer students a broad-based education in the freshman and sophomore years and a more focused education in the junior and senior years. The jobs available in the field of civil engineering are diverse, so a broad base is provided to prepare graduates for a variety of positions. Communication Sciences and Disorders majors are preparing for careers in Speech Language Pathology or Audiology. Computer Engineering

Computer engineering combines electrical engineering and computer science. It is about the interface between machines (hardware) and computers (software). Electrical engineerings and computer engineers do both things, but computer engineers are more involved with software than electrical engineers. Computer engineers design and maintain hardware and software in computer-based systems, from PCs to supercomputers, as well as computer systems that are embedded in vehicles, appliances and communication networks. Specialized areas within computer engineering include system architecture, computer chip design, layout design, package/board design and system integration.

Computer Information Systems

The Computer Information Systems program provides for the needs of a dynamic and integral part of business and industry, the information systems environment. The Computer Information Systems program consists of 121 hours of undergraduate academic credit. In addition to meeting 42 semester hour university core curriculum requirement, students must meet their major core requirements, CIS Environment, Technology and approved technical electives. Students will obtain a background in business applications, computer concepts, problem solving, decision making, human relations, evaluation, analysis, and communications. Information systems technologists can be found in a broad spectrum of careers in the private and public sectors including the areas of end-user support, system analysis, telecommunications specialist, applications development, technology project management, database administration, training, and consulting.

Computer Science

Computer science is the systematic study of computing systems and computation. Numerous professional opportunities exist for graduates with computer science degrees including jobs in industries related to software engineering, internet systems and technology, game design, computer graphics, animation, robotics, artificial intelligence, security, data analytics, medicine, biotechnology, business management and consulting, modeling, as well as graduate study in computing-related fields. The computer science program at the University of Houston is rigorous. There is a strong correlation between logical thinking and computer science. Students considering a major in computer science should thus have shown considerable ability in logical reasoning and mastered the fundamentals of applied mathematics. Students majoring in computer science also receive extensive instruction in state-of-the-art computing architectures, operating systems, compilers, software engineering methods and practices. Construction Management

The objective of the Construction Management program is to provide graduates with knowledge and skills that are valued and sought by the construction industry profession. Commercial, industrial, and highway/heavy sectors of the construction industry need entry-level professional employees who are knowledgeable and skilled. Graduates must have knowledge of construction materials and methods, structural systems, soils site development, business, and contract administration; and have skills for planning, estimating, scheduling, and evaluating project performance. The curriculum provides fundamental and advanced coursework that incorporates current standards and technology for managing and providing quality construction. Software is applied in curriculum courses to prepare students for the utilization of computer applications in construction management.

Digital Media is the creative convergence of digital arts, science, technology and business for human expression, communication, social interaction and education. The Digital Media program is characterized by a curriculum which stresses the “producer” side of digital media and emphasizes the business aspect of field along with its technical and aesthetic aspects. Digital Media, part of the Graphic Communications cluster of industries, is a dynamic and ever-changing field and is ranked among the largest industries in the United States.

By using your leadership talents, you can create a communications tapestry by weaving together people and the technologies of print, photography, motion media, social media, and web design. Effective contemporary visual communication requires a mix of communications technologies; still- and motion media, social media, and web sites in addition to printed media.

French is also the official language of more than 20 countries and is, with English, the only language spoken on all five continents. The many French-speaking regions of the world, with their rich and diverse cultures, share the values of the International Organization of Francophonie. The French Program at the University of Houston offers an undergraduate course of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, preparing students for further study in French, such as a Master’s or a Ph.D., for the teaching profession, and for careers in international business, government, publishing, interpreting and translating. The B.S. in Human Nutrition and Foods (Nutrition and Fitness Track) is a degree plan designed to emphasize the basics of nutrition and wellness. Students will receive integrated coursework in both nutrition and kinesiology. The Nutrition and Fitness Track provides a solid foundation in science, nutrition, and exercise for those looking to work in health and wellness related fields. The B.S. in Human Nutrition and Foods (ACEND Track) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Upon completion of this degree, students are eligible to apply for entry into a supervised practice program which will make them eligible to take the Registration Examination for dietitians. At the undergraduate level, this degree emphasizes the knowledge and skills essential for competent entry-level dietetics practice. To become a Registered Dietitian (RD), students must: Earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Foods which includes a Didactic Program in Dietetics. At that time, students are provided with a verification statement that allows them to apply for entry into a supervised practice program. Successfully complete an ACEND accredited supervised practice program (dietetic internship). Pass the Registration Exam for Dietitians. Italian culture and heritage are unique. The Middle Ages and the Renaissance have a strong Italian imprint. Italian language has been for the centuries the language of music and the arts. Today, it is the language of cinema, fashion, and design, and also the language of a vibrant, modern culture that finds itself at the crossroads of rapid changes in Europe and the Mediterranean. The program leading to a Bachelor in Italian Studies at the University of Houston is designed to give undergraduate students a comprehensive and coherent vision of Italian civilization in its various aspects and manifestations. Courses provide a wide variety of material and approach, including language, literature, visual art, and film. The Italian Studies program boasts award-winning faculty and provides students with the knowledge and skills they need for experiences in a variety of fields, including translation, cultural studies, and business. Study abroad opportunities are an important part of the program. Every year, approximately twenty scholarships are given to Italian majors and minors. The Ugo Di Portanova Scholarship allows three to five students a year to spend an unforgettable summer study experience in Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. Several other scholarships are designed to help students with tuition and expenses. A major in Italian is a bridge to teaching positions, job opportunities with Italian and Italian-American companies in Houston and elsewhere, import-export companies, and the possibility to travel frequently to Italy.

Courses in the Department of Sociology emphasize an understanding of a broad range of subjects: the family, gender roles, work and occupations, deviance, minority groups, population studies, and so forth. In addition to these courses, students majoring in sociology receive a rigorous grounding in statistics and social research methodology, including experimental designs, sample survey designs, qualitative procedures stressing participant observation, and the application of methods to the study of concrete social problems.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) encompasses the planning and management of all the activities and resources that organizations use to produce goods and services that satisfy customer demands. There are five core processes common to all supply chains: planning how to satisfy customer demand, sourcing supply chains for raw materials and services, producing the product or service, delivering the product or service to the customer, and managing returned goods for recycle, repair or reuse. These core processes occur in both manufacturing enterprises and service organization, and apply as well to government agencies and non-profit institutions. Thus the challenges in making all these operations the most efficient and effective are the keys to the success of any organization. As a result the opportunities for initial employment in operations management field and career advancements are tremendous.

  • All the majors in business are admitted first as Pre-business based on the following admission requirements.
    • 3.0 Cumulative GPA including any attempted transfer work, and a 2.5 UH GPA.

The B.A. degree in World Cultures and Literatures is an interdisciplinary major in the department of Modern & Classical Languages. Students acquire expertise in a foreign language and cross-cultural communication skills through advanced coursework in foreign languages and world or area literary and cultural studies. The World Cultures and Literatures major (or minor) allows students to explore global cultures with a focus on a specific world region, theme (such as gender or film studies), or language. The WCL major includes the following areas of concentration: Ancient Studies, Global Cinema Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, German Studies, Francophone Cultures Studies, and Global Modernity Studies. Courses in these concentrations provide a wide variety of material and approach, including language, literature, visual art, and film.
