FAQs

If your intended/planned major changes after your admission to UH, but before you have begun classes, it would be best for this change to officially take place before your New Student Orientation (NSO) – in order to maximize the benefits of the NSO, ensure you are enrolled in the correct classes applicable to your new major, and so on. For more information on this process, contact the Office of Admissions.

Also, be aware that each college at UH will have its own particular policies and requirements for a change of major – and you can find further specifics about this below.

Each college at UH will have its own individual policies and requirements. Check the Major Change Information by College page for college-specific information.

A student who completes a double major receives a single degree comprised of two majors, with the university diploma issued by the college of the student’s chosen primary major. A student who pursues a double degree will be awarded two bachelor’s degrees upon meeting the requirements for each of the majors. See the UH Undergraduate Catalog for the policy.

The timing of when a change of major will be reflected in your official records (such as your Student Services Center) can depend upon the department and college where your major is housed.  While you can technically enroll in coursework for a new major before your records are updated, be sure to consult with an advisor from your new major/department in order to plan effectively and ensure you are meeting all necessary requirements.

The “pre” designation simply means that you have not yet met the minimal course pre-requisites for some major. To find out more about particular pre-requisite requirements related to your major, please consult with an advisor in the chosen major.

Exploratory Studies is a short-term preparatory major for any freshman students still seeking to identify suitable majors and career options.  Student Success Advocates in Exploratory Studies assist students in an appraisal of their interests, skills, talents, and career expectations (as well as providing academic advising, workshops, and other events) so that a degree-granting major is declared by the time 30 credit hours have been completed. See the Exploratory Studies website for more information.
