UHCOP SNPhA Chapter Takes Top Clinical Skills, Research Poster Awards in Regional Conference

April 19 - The University of Houston College of Pharmacy’s Student National Pharmacists Association (SNPhA) Chapter continued its tradition of conference victory bringing home awards and honors from the SNPhA Regions III, IV & V Conference March 29-30 in Kansas City, Mo. 

For a second consecutive year, a UHCOP two-person team won the Kroger Clinical Skills Competition at the regional conference. The clinical skills competition offers an opportunity for pharmacy students to display their pharmaceutical knowledge and patient assessment skills, with the regional level event focused on patient counseling. Members of this year’s top team were Pharm.D. students Hunter Adam and Paige Smith. In addition, the team of Josiah Willingham and Harris Nguyen received an Honorable Mention in the competition.

Pharm.D. student Connie Lau brought home the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for her presentation on utilizing a penicillin allergy questionnaire in the emergency room to improve inpatient antimicrobial stewardship. Coauthors on the winning poster were Texas Southern University Pharm.D. candidate Alyssa Chuidian and UHCOP Pharm.D. candidate Whitney Dike; and Houston Methodist Hospital’s Stephen Hickerson, Pharm.D. (’15), M.S., Wesley Hoffmann, Pharm.D., BCIDP, Catherine Nguyen, Pharm.D. (’20), Sara Osman, Pharm.D. (’20), and Janki Patel, Pharm.D. (’16).

Willingham also presented a poster on his project, “People experiencing homelessness face a higher risk of experiencing untreated mental health conditions and overdose.”

With the largest number of chapter members in attendance, UHCOP’s SNPhA Chapter won the Man Mile Award.

During the convention’s House of Delegates sessions, Chapter Delegate Ashlyn Pulliam defended and won approval for a chapter resolution to make cancer education and prevention a national initiative.

“Our success cannot be possible without the continued gracious support from our alumni, and the legacy that they helped shape,” said Willingham, UHCOP SNPhA chapter president.
