Data Science Showcase and Hackathon

Overview:

The Department of Computer Science, in partnership with the HPE Data Science Institute, proudly recognizes outstanding young researchers who have shown a dedicated commitment to student research in the rapidly evolving fields of computing, data science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Nouhad Rizk, Ph.D., and Claudia Neuhauser, Ph.D., are collaborating to engage students in the research process.

They aim to facilitate the discovery of new knowledge through an integrated showcase of data science and AI technologies.

Outline:

  • Eligibility:
    • Participants must be at least 18 years old.
    • Currently enrolled UH students (Undergraduate & Graduate students)
    • Students from all backgrounds are welcome.

  • Team Composition: Each team can have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 members. Cross-disciplinary teams, comprising members with diverse skills, are encouraged.

  • Original Work: All submissions must be original work created during the hackathon's timeframe. Using pre-existing code or datasets is allowed, but they must be publicly available and appropriately credited.

  • Data Usage: If external datasets are used, they should be publicly accessible, and participants must adhere to the terms of use for that data. Please use the following website to choose the open dataset for your research.
  1. Kaggle
  2. UCI Machine Learning Repository

  • Tools & Software: Participants can use any tools, libraries, or frameworks if they are legally licensed.

  • Submission:
    • Teams must submit their projects by the deadline provided. Late submissions will not be entertained.
    • Submissions typically include code, datasets, a brief report or presentation, and any other relevant documentation. Please use the following template to showcase your research.

  • Intellectual Property: Unless stated otherwise, participants retain the rights to their projects, but the organizing body might ask for permission to showcase or promote the projects for marketing purposes.

  • Judging Criteria: Projects will be judged based on criteria like innovation, feasibility, scalability, impact, and presentation. The exact criteria will be shared at the beginning of the event.

  • Code of Conduct: Participants are expected to maintain a respectful and inclusive environment. Any form of discrimination, harassment, or unethical behavior will lead to immediate disqualification.
  • Mentorship: While seeking guidance from mentors is encouraged, mentors should not directly contribute code or perform the core data analysis.
  • Prizes:
    • Winners must meet all criteria to be eligible for prizes.
    •  There will be five positions. Based on your position will get an amazon gift card.
