The University of Houston mourns the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on Friday, July 19, at the age of 74. She was one of the longest-serving members of Texas’ congressional delegation represented Houston’s 18th Congressional District for 30 years, tirelessly advocating for the interests of her constituents, including the University of Houston, our students, faculty and staff, and the Third Ward community, where UH is located.

Throughout her career as a distinguished public servant, Jackson Lee was a constant presence on the UH campus. She was a familiar face at UH Athletics events, always cheering on the Coogs—she was an especially passionate supporter of UH basketball. She would often visit the University’s federally funded research centers. She relished the opportunity to engage with researchers and faculty, but her greatest passion lay in meeting and mentoring students. She consistently hired UH students as Congressional interns both in her district and in Washington, D.C., providing them with invaluable experiences. Jackson Lee regularly attended graduations, proudly celebrating the achievements of UH students.

UH President Renu Khator expressed grief and gratitude, stating, “The UH family mourns the death of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, an ardent supporter and friend of UH. She is leaving a legacy that will keep transforming lives.”

Jackson Lee’s relentless advocacy for UH included helping UH secure federal grants and establish programs that benefited Houston, enhanced student success initiatives and bolstered the University’s core research and educational missions, particularly in the fields of energy and health.

Jackson Lee was a cherished member of the University of Houston family. Our thoughts are with Elwyn Lee,
UH vice president for neighborhood and strategic initiatives, and their family during this difficult time. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s lifetime commitment to fairness and justice, and her dedication to education and community service will continue to inspire and transform the lives of many within the UH community and beyond.
