Frequently Asked Questions

You can start by attending one of our Informational or General Meetings throughout the semester. Although this isn't required, meetings give you the opportunity to learn about MVP and the upcoming volunteer opportunities lined up for each semester. Information about upcoming meetings can be found on the events tab on our website. Afterward, you can join MVP on Get Involved and browse the volunteer opportunities on our website to find volunteer events that are of interest to you. Membership is completely free and open to the entire student body. Once you find an event that you would like to volunteer at, fill out the registration form and an officer from our team will contact you with more information.

In order to volunteer with MVP, students must first join MVP on Get Involved. Then, you can view the volunteer opportunities to learn about upcoming events and fill out the registration form for any event that you would like to volunteer at. Once you have registered, the officer overseeing the event will contact you via email a few days prior to the event with details about carpooling, meeting location, attire, and the volunteer tasks and responsibilities.

There is no membership fee. The Metropolitan Volunteer Program is a university-sponsored student organization, which means that it is funded through the University by Student Fees. Consequently, students do not have to pay to volunteer or become a member.

The only membership requirement is that members and volunteers must be students currently enrolled at the University of Houston.

Students who volunteer for 6 or more hours can receive an MVP shirt. The shirt can be picked up at the MVP office, which is located at the Student Center North Rm. Yes! We arrange a carpool for our smaller, off-campus ongoing events, and use buses for the larger off-campus events. If you need transportation to an event or can provide transportation, please indicate that on the sign-up form when you register. Carpool drivers receive an additional 30 minutes to their total service hours and are entered into a drawing to win various prizes at our end of the year banquet.

There are many ways that MVP can help non-profit organizations reach student volunteers. We can post volunteer opportunities in the weekly newsletter that we email to members and volunteers, invite a speaker from your organization to speak at a general MVP meeting, or provide volunteers for one-time events by posting the event on our social media and actively recruiting volunteers. MVP also hosts a volunteer fair which gives organizations the opportunity to reach students looking for volunteer opportunities. Please fill out the volunteer request form, and an officer from our team will contact you to discuss how we can help you reach volunteers.

The best place to find the most updated information about MVP volunteer opportunities and events is on our website. We also send out newsletters on a weekly basis to our members and volunteers with information about upcoming volunteering opportunities through Metropolitan Volunteer Program as well as opportunities to volunteer with other non-profit agencies in the greater Houston area.

If you can’t attend an event that you signed up for, please email the officer that is overseeing the event at least 24 hours in advance so MVP can sign up another volunteer to fill your spot.

If the registration form for an event is closed or unavailable, it is likely that all of the spots for that volunteer opportunity have been filled. You can contact the officer that is overseeing the event to find out if your name can be added to a waitlist or additional spots have opened up.
