About
Celebrate Houston’s diverse arts scene through the women who “go forth from Houston” by continuing the legacy of the 1977 National Women’s Conference. The Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts is proud to present two days of arts programming and exhibitions, culminating with a reception and send off event on Tuesday, November 7 from 7 – 10 p.m. in the Wilhelmina Grove (between the School of Art and Moores School of Music). The event will feature dance and art performances, art cars, live graffiti and mural art in an open-air gallery, a community engagement salon and a live performance by the female-fronted “art punk” band Mydolls.

The National Women’s Conference: Taking 1977 into the 21st Century
November 6 – 7, 2017, Rockwell Pavilion and Cullen Performance Hall
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference held November 18 – 21, 1977. At this momentous event, 2,000 elected delegates and around 32,000 observers descended upon Houston, Texas to participate in the first and only federally funded National Women’s Conference in U.S. history. The Houston Conference reflected the tensions of a nation at a crossroad, with some seeing it as a promising expression of a more representative, rights-centered democracy and others viewing it as a liberal cooptation of taxpayers’ dollars.
With two dozen panels and iconic guests including feminist activist Gloria Steinem, this year's conference remains one of the most imaginative and wide-ranging exercises in civic engagement in the 20th century. We seek to draw attention to the diversity, ingenuity and determination of the original conference by carring on the conversation in Houston once again at UH from November 6 – 7, 2017.
