UH Joins Consortium to Support Defense Manufacturing

Ben Xu, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and Presidential Frontier Faculty Fellow at UH, will serve as the site director of the Houston-based Demonstration Hub of the America’s Additive Foundry Consortium, which received a $5 million grant to work on a project to ensure the U.S. military has a stable supply of domestically produced, high-quality tactical alloys critical for national defense.

Title: Multi-Scale Models Bridging Levels of Analysis in Aging and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and AD-Related Dementias (ADRD) (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Application Deadline:  June 13, 2024

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to invite applications proposing to establish multi-scale computational models recapitulating dynamic changes associated with aging and Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). This broad scope encompasses a variety of computational approaches such as mathematical and computational modeling, image analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to better understand aging processes and AD/ADRD across molecules, cells and networks, and cognition and behavior.

Title: Investigating Distinct and Overlapping Mechanisms in TDP-43 Proteinopathies, including in LATE, FTD and other ADRDs (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Application Deadline:  October 04, 2024

This FOA would support establishing deeper mechanistic insight and causal relationships between TDP-43 pathology and phenotypic outcomes, as well as mechanistic interactions between TDP-43 and other co-pathologies, such TMEM106B. Additionally, it would include comparisons (including mechanistic, molecular, structural, cellular, genetic, -omic, anatomical, neuropathological, etc.) between TDP-43 proteinopathies, including LATE, with or without AD-NC, and FTD and/or ALS.

Title: Mechanistic Investigations into ADRD Multiple Etiology Dementias (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Application Deadline:  October 04, 2024

This NOFO would support investigations with a minimum of two relevant co-pathologies (e.g., tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP-43, TMEM106B, vascular), with optional risk factors and co-morbidities, to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms of how/why multi-proteinopathy interactions drive worsening neurodegenerative processes and phenotypic outcomes. Studies should examine co-pathology cellular and molecular interactions across brain regions and time in proximate cell population, across various intracellular dynamics and localization, and upstream and downstream from aggregated protein states to determine what events lead to worse phenotypic outcomes.

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to support research to continue the development of drug development tools that have an accepted or a reviewable Letter of Intent (LOI) within a drug development tool qualification program within either CBER or CDER. The grants will be used to further the development of tools that, once qualified, will be made publicly available to fill unmet needs in drug development.

Title: FY24 Connect and Protect: Law Enforcement Behavioral Health Response Program

Application Deadline:  May 01, 2024

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is seeking applications for funding. OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety, protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. With this solicitation, BJA seeks applications for the Connect and Protect: Law Enforcement Behavioral Health Response Program (Connect and Protect). This program supports law enforcement–behavioral health cross-system collaboration to improve public health and public safety by improving responses to and outcomes for individuals with mental health disorders (MHDs) or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders (MHSUDs). BJA provides grant funding to help entities prepare, create, or expand comprehensive plans and then implement these collaborative projects to target people who qualify.

Title: Regional Centers for Public Health Preparedness and Response

Anticipated Application Deadline:  May 15, 2024

The purpose of the NOFO is to establish and maintain a network of Regional Centers for Public Health Preparedness and Response to increase implementation of evidence-based strategies and interventions (EBSIs) and to improve public health preparedness and response, as informed by the needs of the communities involved. Support will be provided for up to ten centers to determine and support implementation of activities needed to increase use of EBSIs that will improve public health preparedness and response, as informed by the needs of the communities as described in regional workplans. The goal is to fund one center in each of the 10 HHS Regions.

Title: Regional Resource Hubs for Purpose-Grown Energy Crops

Application Deadline:  June 13, 2024

The 2024 Regional Resource Hubs for Purpose-Grown Energy Crops FOA supports the focus of the BETO Renewable Carbon Resources Program in developing strategies and supporting technology development to reduce the cost, improve the quality, increase the quantity, and maximize the environmental benefits of using renewable carbon resources. The FOA addresses enabling the mobilization of low carbon intensity purpose-grown energy crops across varied agronomic and geographic landscapes through the generation of data and research findings. The FOA seeks applications that will support resource mobilization, including improvements to quality, yield, cost, mechanization of propagation/planting systems, pest management, carbon intensity reduction, ecosystem services, and more from the cultivation of purpose-grown energy crops. Data generated over the course of four to ten years will be used to improve modeling projections, adapt crops and/or crop management strategies to address varying climates, understand variations in soil and belowground carbon storage, quantify ecosystem services, and reduce the carbon intensity for specified purpose-grown energy crop systems. The four subtopic areas in this FOA are: Subtopic Area 1a. Algae. Subtopic Area 1b: Herbaceous Energy Crops. Subtopic Area 1c: Intermediate Energy Crops. Subtopic Area 1d: Short-Rotation Woody Crops.

Title: Accelerated Research in Quantum Computing

Application Deadline: May 08, 2024.  Limited submission: Applicant institutions are limited to no more than three letters of intent, pre-applications, or applications as the lead institution. Internal deadline: March 14, 2024

The 2023 Basic Research Needs Workshop in Quantum Computing and Networking identified several priority research directions (PRDs); this FOA targets end-to-end software toolchains to program and control quantum systems and networks at scale (PRD1), quantum algorithms delivering quantum advantage (PRD2), and resilience through error detection, prevention, protection, mitigation, and correction (PRD4). These are key components for the development of a software ecosystem that must be ready to account for modularity and interoperability on one side, and for specialization and performance on another. Research proposed in response to this FOA must primarily focus on addressing one of the two topics: (1) Modular Software Stack, or (2) Quantum Utility.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is issuing an Advanced Research Concepts (ARC) Opportunity, inviting submissions of Abstracts for innovative exploratory research concepts in the technical domain of Physics. This ARC Opportunity, Quantum Materials Engineering using Electromagnetic Fields (QUAMELEON) is issued under the master ARC Exploration Announcement (EA), DARPA-EA-24-01.

This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) encourages response from the broad U.S. science and engineering research and education community to an RFI that is being conducted on behalf of the NAIRR Pilot federal interagency working group. The goal is to gather current and anticipated research and education use cases for the NAIRR Pilot and to also identify current and anticipated challenges and barriers that researchers and educators may face in accessing and using AI resources and tools for their activities. This DCL and the RFI do not invite research proposals.

Title: General Social Survey Competition

Application Deadline:  August 15, 2024. Limited submission: Organizations are restricted to submitting only one proposal in response to this solicitation. Internal deadline: May 15, 2024

The General Social Survey (GSS) is a nationally representative interview survey of the United States adult population that collects data on a wide range of topics: behavioral items such as group membership and participation; personal psychological evaluations including measures of well-being, misanthropy and life satisfaction; attitudinal questions on such public issues as crime and punishment, race relations, gender roles and spending priorities; and demographic characteristics of respondents and their parents. The Research Infrastructure in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Program (RISBS) in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences expects to make one award for the next four-year funding cycle, fiscal years 2025-2028, to support the 2026 and 2028 GSS and the U.S. component of the ISSP survey. We anticipate an award in the range of $14 million and at most $16 million over four years to support two waves of data collection, dissemination activities, and outreach. The expected starting date is August 2025.

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for research and evaluation studies to produce practical knowledge that has the potential to improve the examination and interpretation of physical evidence in forensic science laboratories across the community of practice. This program furthers DOJ’s mission by supporting the development of new knowledge and tools to address the challenges of crime and justice in the United States. NIJ’s Forensic Science Strategic Research Plan and Forensic Science R&D Technology Working Group (TWG) identify current research priorities and technology challenges encountered in operational forensic science laboratories. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for funding. OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety and protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for funding for proposals to study how adopted technologies with a forensic science application impact criminal justice systems, how the implementation of forensic laboratory programs or practices broadly effect outcomes, and how changes in policies adapt the use of forensic evidence. NIJ seeks rigorous evaluations of the implementation of technologies, methods, or workflow processes to understand the impact on backlog reduction, capacity enhancement, cost relative to benefit, workforce development, or case closure efficiency. Title: FY24 Research and Evaluation on Firearm Violence and Mass Shootings

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for funding. OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety and protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for funding of research and program evaluation projects specific to the intervention and prevention of intentional, interpersonal firearm violence and mass shootings in the United States. This solicitation has two categories: 1) research on mass shootings, including insider threat and leakage and the role of the news media and social media platforms; and 2) research on the effectiveness of campaigns implemented in school systems and/or through school personnel to encourage the parents, guardians, and relatives of school-aged children to store firearms safely and securely. This program furthers DOJ’s mission to uphold the rule of law, to keep our country safe, and to protect civil rights.

OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety and protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for rigorous research and evaluation projects to inform policy and practice to prevent and respond to hate crimes. Though applications may cover a range of topics, NIJ is particularly interested in funding: (1) evaluations of federal, state, or locally funded efforts to combat hate crimes; (2) research that informs strategies to prevent hate crimes; (3) research and evaluations of strategies to improve the reporting, identification, and response to hate crimes; and (4) research and evaluations of strategies to improve outcomes for survivors and their communities. This program furthers DOJ’s mission to uphold the rule of law, to keep our country safe, and to protect civil rights.
