Dear Students:

We hope you are enjoying winter break. Since you’ve been away, the University of Houston has been monitoring the rapid spread of the omicron variant throughout the country. As we prepare to safely resume instruction as scheduled with the start of the spring semester on Jan. 18, I wanted to make you aware of some short-term changes that will be effective the first two weeks of the spring semester.

As we did during the fall, UH will have a soft-opening to the semester. UH facilities and resources will remain open and available to students, and your current schedule will not change. The way in which your class is delivered may be temporarily adjusted during the first two weeks of the semester. Faculty instructors will have the option to modify their current face-to-face or hybrid classes in such a way as to preserve face-to-face learning options for you, while functionally reducing in-person class size.

Soft Opening of Classes (Jan. 18-30)

  • If your faculty instructor is comfortable with the current density in your classroom, your instructor may choose to continue with typical face-to-face delivery during regular class days and times currently listed on the course schedule.
  • If there is concern about class density, your instructor may implement class attendance policies that result in students attending in-person classes on alternating class days.
  • If your instructor does modify attendance polices to reduce class density, the class content and materials covered during in-person class sessions will be easily available to those students who are not present in the face-to-face classroom.

Your faculty instructors will notify you if they are making face-to-face attendance modifications to reduce classroom density before the first day of class. You can also expect each of your professors to provide a class syllabus with information on current policies, resources and expectations for you in each of your classes.

Please contact your faculty instructors if you have questions about modifications they may decide to make for your classes. An FAQ for students is available on the Office of the Provost website. Any additional questions you may have can be sent to provost@uh.edu.

I want you to know that we will continue to monitor public health conditions to best support you and the entire UH community. I look forward to welcoming you back to the University of Houston for a successful spring semester.

Warm regards,

Paula Myrick Short
