End of Semester Updates for Residents
11/16/2020, 12:05:01 PM

Residents,

As the Fall 2020 semester comes to an end, Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) would like to share some important updates. All residential communities will remain open with a 24-hour front desk and on-call staff available to assist with lockouts and emergencies.

If you have any questions at all, please reach out to your Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), your Resident Advisor (RA), or your Supervisor of Residential Desk Services (SRD) for assistance.

Staying on campus during winter break

If you are planning to stay on campus for winter break please keep in mind a portion of the university will be closed, and there will be limited services as it relates to dining, postal services, campus recreation, and facilities.

Returning for 2021

If you are leaving to go home for winter break and plan on returning for the Spring 2021 semester, please make sure you complete the following checklist:

  • Clean your refrigerator and remove items that could spoil
  • Clean common spaces
  • Clean your room
  • Unplug electronics
  • Remove perishable items from your room
  • Remove trash
  • Close blinds
  • Check your mail
  • Leave your thermostat at a reasonable temperature
  • Make sure your alarm clock is turned off or any device that has a timer on it
  • Take home important items

Canceling Your Contract

If you are leaving to go home for winter break and DO NOT plan on returning for the Spring 2021 semester, you must email your residential hall SRD.  In your email, please state that you wish to cancel your contract. Your SRD will inform you of the cancellation fees you will incur. Residents must move out by December 18, 2020, at 12 pm.

To avoid additional fees, please use the process outlined in our Check-In/Check-Out Procedures page for a proper checkout.

Once your space has been cleaned and all your items have been removed, you will need to properly check out at the front desk by signing the Check-Out Envelope. If you live in, Cougar Village 1, University Lofts, Bayou Oaks, or Moody Towers, you will return your key at this time.

December Graduating Residents and Move Out Dates

If you are canceling your contract due to graduating, email your residential hall SRD. In your email, please state that you are graduating. Residents who are graduating will not incur a cancellation fee. Residents must move out by December 18, 2020, at 12 pm.

To avoid additional fees, please use the process outlined in our Check-In/Check-Out Procedures page for a proper checkout.

Once your space has been cleaned and all your items have been removed, all residents will properly check out at the front desk by signing the Check-Out Envelope. If you live in, Cougar Village 1, University Lofts, Bayou Oaks, or Moody Towers, you will return your key at this time.

Damages & Billing

  • Resident Advisors will assess each room once residents have moved out. Residents may be billed for the following items:
    • New damages found in your room/suite/apartment can result in a charge to your account
    • Items left in the room are considered abandoned property and will be discarded.
    • If the furniture is damaged or missing in the resident’s room, residents will be billed for the replacement.

Mail

  • Check your email to ensure you have removed all your mail from the parcel.
  •  If you are no longer living on campus, please complete a change of address form on the UH Postal Services website. If residents do not fill out the form mail will be returned to the sender.
  • For students that will no longer be living on campus, please remember to fill out the mail forwarding request using the link below.
