Commuter Appreciation Week

Commuter Appreciation Week

Commuter Appreciation Week at the University of Houston is a campus-wide celebration dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contributions of commuter students. This annual event aims to foster a sense of belonging for those who navigate the challenges of commuting, emphasizing the vital role they play in the university community. Throughout the week, a variety of activities are organized, ranging from grab-and-go breakfast at key commuter hubs to exclusive workshops addressing commuter-specific needs, such as time management and stress reduction.

Appreciation events often include themed days, where students can showcase their commuting experiences and connect with fellow commuters. Furthermore, the week serves as an opportunity for the university to gather feedback on improving commuting experiences, reinforcing the commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. Commuter Appreciation Week not only celebrates the resilience of commuter students but also strengthens the sense of community at the University of Houston.

2024-25 FAFSA Delays

Due to major changes, the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office of Federal Student Aid informed colleges and universities last week they will not be ready to send students’ completed Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) to institutions until the first half of March at the earliest. This delay is of considerable concern to us, as we understand students and families need time to consider their financial options before they can make informed college-going decisions. Currently, the state of Texas’ priority deadline for FAFSA completion is still March 15. Please continue to encourage students to complete their 2024-25 FAFSA applications as soon as possible to avoid any additional delays. Rest assured, our office will do everything it can to ensure we are processing students’ 2024-25 FAFSA applications in the most expedient and efficient manner once we begin receiving ISIR’s from ED. We will continue to keep students, families and the community informed via electronic correspondence and our FAFSA Simplication Act website. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call us at 713-743-1010, option 5, or email us at sfa@central.uh.edu.

Celebrating Black History Month

In recognition and observance of Black History Month, A.D. Bruce Religion Center and the Campus Ministries Association at the University of Houston would like to acknowledge the following Black Worship Leaders.  Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
