Celebrating Black History Month

February is when we celebrate Black History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and honoring the achievements, contributions, and history of African Americans. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the pioneering efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a distinguished African American historian, and educator. In 1926, Dr. Woodson initiated the idea of a "Negro History Week" to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass in February. The aim was to emphasize the importance of acknowledging and studying the significant role of African Americans throughout American history, which had been largely neglected in mainstream education.

Over time, the week-long celebration evolved into a month, officially designated as Black History Month in 1976. The extension allowed for a more comprehensive exploration of the diverse and rich heritage of African Americans. Black History Month serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the African American community, highlighting their resilience, cultural contributions, and pivotal role in shaping the nation's narrative. It has become an annual opportunity for education, reflection, and the promotion of unity as people from all backgrounds come together to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and acknowledge the ongoing journey towards equality and justice.

Interfaith Dialogue Dinner

Interfaith dialogue refers to cooperative, constructive, and positive interaction between people of different religious traditions (i.e. "faiths") and/or spiritual or humanistic beliefs, at both the individual and institutional levels. It is distinct from syncretism or alternative religion, in that dialogue often involves promoting understanding between different religions or beliefs to increase acceptance of others, rather than to synthesize new beliefs. The Interfaith Dialogue Dinner Series is an opportunity to understand and show respect for other religious/spiritual identities, thereby increasing our appreciation of their values. All are welcome to be a part of the engaging table discussion during a dinner service that will hopefully satisfy the mind, the body and the soul.
