Dear Faculty and Staff,

We are pleased to announce that an agreement has been signed to use Canvas as the learning management system (LMS) for the University of Houston. The Canvas selection process involved the work of a committee of 57 faculty, technical staff, administration, accessibility experts and students in early 2022. The committee reviewed and tested the top learning management systems and concluded that Canvas was the best choice for the University of Houston.

The implementation and transition will be a 12-week process that begins this month and includes configuring Canvas and providing training for users. A soft launch involving a select group of faculty (click here to apply) is planned for the Spring 2023 semester, with a full transition to Canvas occurring in the Summer of 2023. Blackboard will no longer be available to UH faculty starting Fall 2023.

Canvas is the LMS of choice for many school districts and feeder two-year schools to UH. It is also used at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University. We believe Canvas will be a valuable tool in pursuing student success at UH.

Our goal is to transition to Canvas as smoothly as possible. This will require effort on your part to prepare your courses for migration to Canvas and attend Canvas training (if needed). Please review the Power-On FAQs page below for timeline, migration, training, tutorials, and other specifics. The Blackboard and Faculty and Departmental Instructional Support teams, and college Instructional Designers are ready to assist you as we shift to a modern and accessible learning management system.
