Dear University of Houston Faculty and Staff:

It is an honor to announce that Dr. Wynne Chin, C.T. Bauer Professor of Decision and Information Sciences, is the recipient of the 2022 Esther Farfel Award. Dr. Chin’s leadership, scholarly achievements, exceptional teaching skills, and support for our students have earned him this recognition.

Established in 1979, the Farfel Award is the highest honor accorded to only one faculty member each year at the University of Houston (UH). To receive it, a professor must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and service. The award is named for Esther Farfel, the wife of Aaron Joseph Farfel who was a member of the University of Houston System Board of Regents. Mr. Farfel served on the Board for 16 years and established the award to honor his wife.

Since his arrival at UH in 1997, Dr. Chin has been an asset to the University. His extensive research in information sciences and published works on the Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS) technique have earned thousands of citations worldwide. In fact, he is UH's sixth most cited faculty member, with 75,000 career citations.

As a professor, Dr. Chin extends his talents to guiding both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as mentoring doctoral students across different colleges. Among his peers, he is recognized for his advocacy of faculty and shared governance. To that end, he has served Faculty Senate twice and was elected president of the Texas Council on Faculty Senates in 2019, where he helped establish the National Council of Faculty Senates.

Dr. Chin is the true representation of faculty excellence, and we are grateful for his continued service to students, his fellow faculty, and the University of Houston.

Please join me in congratulating him on receiving UH’s highest faculty honor, and feel free to read this profile on Dr. Chin for further insights into his career and service to our University.

Warm regards,

Paula Myrick Short
