University of Houston

Dear Cougar Community,

As we begin a new semester, we wanted to update you on our continuing efforts to improve mental health and wellness at the University of Houston. Over the summer, we have made significant progress. Our aim goes beyond advocating for individual self-care; we're fostering a culture of community care that enhances mental wellness on our campus, in our classrooms, offices and social circles. The strength of our community shines brightest when we look after one another.
Here are a few of the improvements we’re making this fall:

CAPS Enhancements

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has substantially expanded its presence. We are currently developing a pilot program to position counselors directly within select colleges. Furthermore, CAPS will have an increased presence in the Student Center as we explore the feasibility of a long-term relocation to this venue during future expansion. Also, we are progressing with the signage and wayfinding project at the CAPS Health 2 location.

Expansion of Services

CoogsCARE: We're committed to not just strengthening the resources available to our university community, but also increasing awareness of and accessibility to these crucial resources across campus. We've developed a central resource hub, the CoogsCARE website, to offer a user-friendly platform where students, parents, faculty and staff can find information, seek guidance and connect with professionals. This site will continue to evolve with new resources and programs that will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

24/7 Crisis Care: Recognizing the unpredictable nature of crises, we will be enhancing our partnership with our 24/7 crisis care service provider for students. This service ensures our students always have someone to talk to, anytime they need by simply calling the CAPS number at 713-743-5454. In addition, we’ll be adding a new suite of services that will help us address the mental health needs of our students at scale. Another crisis option is the streamlined 988 national suicide prevention lifeline that can be reached by phone, text or chat by any student, faculty or staff. Our faculty and staff continue to have 24/7 access to support with our Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Peer-to-Peer Mental Health Community: We will soon be launching an anonymous platform for peer-to-peer support, allowing our students to talk through some of their mental health challenges with fellow students. Students will receive more detailed information on these services in the coming weeks and stay tuned to the CoogsCARE website for updates.

Enhanced Training Programs: The training programs offered to our faculty, staff and students have been revamped to progress from an introductory to an advanced level. This offers everyone a chance to learn how to be of assistance to someone in need and become an integral part of the culture of care on campus.

The Future of Agnes Arnold Hall

Agnes Arnold Hall has reopened. Classes have resumed in the first, second and third floor classrooms. Access to the lower level will remain restricted and perimeter fencing will remain in place; however, security check-ins are no longer required during regular hours (6:30 a.m.-9 p.m.).

The first of a three-phase renovation project planned for Agnes Arnold Hall has been completed. Phase one included installation of temporary fencing in the building’s veranda openings, walkways and stairwells. These actions were necessary first steps, but they were just the beginning. Phase two of renovation will be completed in 2024. This will see the inclusion of vertical tension cabling that is less visually obvious and more aesthetically appropriate. The final phase of the project will enhance the overall functionality of the building.

The University has updated its design guidelines to incorporate reflection and meditation space in all future construction projects.

Community of Care

We cannot emphasize enough how vital it is for us all to prioritize self-care. Equally crucial is extending our care and support to those around us. Each one of us plays a pivotal role in shaping a compassionate environment. By making more human connections and checking in on one another, we can continue destigmatizing mental health issues and fostering understanding, so we can collectively support one another.

Our work is ongoing. As we continuously strive for improvement, we welcome your insights and suggestions. You can reach us at CoogsCARE@uh.edu. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey.
