Hope wrapped in a frame

Katrina evacuees can see clearly now

One day you’re peering at life with perfect clarity. The next day, life seems like a blurry haze. For thousands of Hurricane Katrina evacuees, an uncertain future was magnified by the loss of a pair of specs.
But the gift of hope came wrapped in a frame.
Spectera, one of the nation’s largest managed vision-care programs, donated 4,200 eyeglass frames valued at $294,000 to assist the College of Optometry in providing quality vision and eyecare during the Katrina relief effort.

“There were many patients who couldn’t see up close because they’d lost their glasses. They couldn’t fill out forms,” remembers Dr. Lloyd Pate, clinical associate professor and director of the Astrodome/Reliant Center eye clinic. “They couldn’t see the postings on the missing persons boards.”

Like a MASH unit in action, the college’s faculty, students, alumni, and partners mobilized resources and set up triage centers and stand-alone primary eyecare centers at the Astrodome/Reliant Center and the George R. Brown Convention Center—providing free full-service vision care to about 2,800 patients.

More than a year after the disaster, Katrina patients are still benefiting from Spectera’s gift to UH’s University Eye Institute. But the college hasn’t stopped with eyeglasses. They’re also continuing follow-up care for Katrina patients who experienced other vision-related medical issues, such as diabetes, hypertension, and eye infections.

As of March 20, 2006:

Astrodome /Reliant Center (Sept. 1-13, 2005)
and George R. Brown (Sept. 7-17, 2005)

• Approximately 2,800 patients seen
• 6% Glaucoma
• 30% Eye Disease
• Glasses Prescribed: More than 1,500

University Eye Institute

• Eye Examinations: 1,236
• Medical Examinations: 75
• Ophthalmic Procedures: 118
• Glasses: 1,064
• Contacts: 138

Spectera’s gift was made in honor of Dr. Sam Quintero, Department of Clinical Sciences chair.

Suit family boosts science fellowships, faculty support

What happens to a dream deferred? In this case, it means great things for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Drs. Herman (’48) and Joan Suit established two endowments with deferred gifts—charitable gift annuities that total $380,000. When realized, one endowment will provide faculty support, including reference materials, library resources, information technology, and more. The second will provide graduate fellowships to students in applied computational mathematics. Dr. Herman Suit is chief of radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Andre Soriano Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Joan Suit served as senior research scientist in microbial genetics at MIT. To date, the Suits have given more than $600,000 in deferred gifts to the college because they believe in the university’s and the college’s potential to be “particularly remarkable.”

Wainbergs keep innovation alive with arts gift

Creativity, experimentation, and innovation are alive and well thanks to the seed support of a three-year-pledge. Longtime UH supporters Dan and Miranda Wainberg and friends Don and Vicky Eastveld joined forces to start the Visionary Initiatives Fund at the University of Houston. This new fund encourages the creation of new works in music and visual arts. Blaffer Gallery’s Tam Van Tran: Psychonaut exhibition and the Moores School of Music’s world premiere of Rob Smith’s Concerto for Orchestra at the Texas Music Festival were the fund’s inaugural commissioned works this summer. The Moores School of Music and Blaffer Gallery will build upon the Visionary Initiatives Fund to nurture and sustain creativity as well as document and distribute recordings and publications to a broader audience.

UH, city of Houston team for mobile vision clinic

In partnership with the city of Houston, the College of Optometry will lease, for $1 per year, a mobile medical unit. The vehicle, equipped with the latest in optometric technology, will bring comprehensive on-site vision services to patients in need of optometric care. The city and the college will focus on assisting those who don’t have access to the traditional healthcare system and who are unable to travel to the University Eye Institute or one of its neighborhood clinics.

Fiscal Year 2006 Financial Snapshot

$716.4 Million - Total Budget (includes operations, restricted, research, and capital budgets)

$627.6 Million - Total Revenues and Other Sources of Funding

$623.8 Million - Total Expenses and Other Uses of Funds

$77.56 Million - Total Research Awards

$281.8 Million - Total Research Proposals

On the eve of the 80th Texas Legislative Session, the University of Houston notes with gratitude the support of the Texas Legislature and other elected officials who share our belief that the future of Texas depends on an educated workforce.

State funding totaling $201.2 million in fiscal year 2006, representing 28.1 percent of the university’s budget, is still our largest source of revenue.

During the last session, the Legislature approved $57.6 million in tuition revenue bonds for renovations to science labs throughout the campus, some of which had not been refurbished or updated in many years.

These funds come at a time when the University of Houston is expanding its scientific research into new and exciting areas such as thin-film materials, fuel cells, bionanotechnology, and other areas that hold great promise for the future of medicine, health, energy, and the environment.

As the upcoming legislative session approaches, we pledge to be accountable to the citizens and taxpayers of Texas and to our constituents—students, legislators, donors, and supporters. We also pledge to do everything in our power to continue offering excellent educational opportunities to all qualified students at an affordable price.

Fiscal Year 2006 - Private Support

On behalf of the University of Houston, thank you for your generous gifts, with which you are helping to ensure the standards of an excellent education. Your support of our students, faculty, staff, and programs makes a difference for today’s students and generations to come.

This list reflects private support at the level of $10,000 and above made solely to the University of Houston from September 1, 2005, through August 31, 2006. Some gifts may represent a pledge payment toward a larger commitment. This list does not reflect gifts made to the other UH System universities or to systemwide projects. Gifts directed to other UH System universities will be included in their individual reports. The Office of Development regrets any errors or omissions and would appreciate notification of corrections. Contact Amy Leggio at 713-743-8865 or amleggio@central.uh.edu.
