Beverly Thom, program manager of the Student Centers facilities & operations, Kevin Nguyen, associate director of the Center for Student Advocacy and Community, and Laura Zavala-Membreno, Director of the Women and Gender Resource Center, are the well-deserved recipients of the Golden Paw Employee of the Month award for June.

The Professional Development and Engagement Committee (PDEC), a newly established committee within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), has made a notable impact in its inaugural year. Born from the consolidation of two former committees, PDEC has swiftly positioned itself as a vital resource for DSA staff, facilitating professional growth, engagement, and recognition.  

Led by Tri-chairs Beverly Thom, Kevin Nguyen, and Laura Zavala-Membreno, the PDEC has made substantial strides in its first year. In the Fall 2023 semester, the committee hosted a “New Hire Welcome Lunch,” providing an opportunity for new DSA staff members to connect with their peers and learn about the division in a relaxed, informal setting. This was followed by a successful Winter Social in December, which saw over 100 attendees celebrating the season with festive decorations, engaging activities, and a chance to unwind and network. Michael Crook, director of the Center for Student and Community Advocacy stated, "For me, the joy comes not just from the work we do, but from the people we do it for and with. Kevin embodies everything that makes a great colleague—creativity, energy, laughter, and a genuine care for people. His positive impact is evident throughout the office and on the many committees he serves on." 

Spring 2024 brought the much-anticipated Pal-entine’s Day event, a beloved tradition within the division that allowed colleagues to celebrate their work friendships and exchange words of appreciation. This event exemplified PDEC's commitment to fostering a supportive and positive work environment. 

One of the committee's many highlights was the coordination of the End of Year DSA Awards. The Tri-chairs played a crucial role in crafting the event's theme, updating award descriptions to align with the DSA’s strategic goals, and ensuring the event proceeded flawlessly. Their efforts included managing the food, script, and presentation, and they served as the hosts for the ceremony, acknowledging both nominees and winners. 

Additionally, the PDEC Tri-chairs took on significant roles in supporting the University of Houston System (UHS) Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Leadership Conference hosted at UH-Main Campus on May 22. Laura Zavala-Membreno led the Programs Subcommittee, designing a new scoring matrix and implementing a masked review process to ensure impartiality in judging proposals. She also managed communications with presenters and collaborated with the Logistics and Marketing Subcommittees to ensure a smooth conference experience. “I am astonished by Laura’s continued commitment to the UH Community. She is the ideal team member. She is always willing to assist in efforts that enhance the experiences of everyone she interacts with,” said Donell Young, dean of students and associate vice president of Student Affairs.” 

Kevin Nguyen and Beverly Thom contributed to the Logistics Committee, highlighting their adaptability and dedication. “Bev has been a loyal University employee for over 20 years and works to encourage that kind of dedication in new DSA staff members, through her work with PDEC, said Eve Esch, executive director of the Student Centers.” 

The successful execution of the UHS Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Conference, which saw strong attendance and well-received workshops, underscored the Tri-chairs’ ability to manage complex responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to both the DSA and the broader University of Houston system. 

The PDEC Tri-chairs have made significant strides in advancing professional development and fostering a sense of community within the DSA. Their work has not only enhanced the division's internal environment but also strengthened its representation and collaboration with University of Houston system colleagues. Their contributions have been instrumental in building a cohesive and supportive atmosphere for all staff members.
