UH Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) collaborated with UH Athletics and the American Athletic Conference to increase awareness of the importance of mental health, especially among college students and athletes. CAPS and Athletics partnered with The American for the annual campaign, "Pow6rful Minds."

During the SMU-UH football game on October 24, broadcast nationally on ESPN, UH Athletics played The American Conference video of athletes from all 13 conference universities encouraging viewers to seek out mental health resources. In the video the athletes advocated for reducing the stigma of mental health conditions, pointing out however physically fit an individual is, mental fitness is equally important.

“The messaging behind the Pow6rful Minds Campaign is a great way to broaden the conversation about mental health on university campuses," said Dr. Marti Trummer-Cabrera, CAPS Psychologist. "UH Counseling and Psychological Services has really enjoyed partnering with UH Athletics and our student-athletes in an effort to move this conversation forward on the University of Houston Campus.”

For UH students, Counseling and Psychological Services helps Coogs on their journey to living life to the fullest. CAPS offers a dynamic array of services intended to meet the needs of every student. From their new Essential Skills workshop series and Single Session Therapy to more traditional individual, group, and couples counseling, CAPS is always looking to find the best solution for each student.

"With record enrollment numbers at the University of Houston, CAPS has seen an increase in counseling utilization," said Dr. Norma Ngo, CAPS Director. "Just in one year, UH CAPS has seen an 13 percent increase in unique individuals using CAPS Services and a 51% increase since FY 17."

But funding for services to students is not unlimited. Donors can help through tax-deductible gifts to support CAPS services for Coogs. It is easy to support mental health on the UH campus, simply text CAPS to 71777.
