Center for Student Media Celebrates Two Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Nominations

HOUSTON - Two publications produced by students at The Cougar, the student-run newspaper at the University of Houston, have been nominated for the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker award. The Cougar, the University of Houston’s student newspaper, and Cooglife, the student magazine, were voted among the top publications in the country.

Each year, the Associated Collegiate Press presents collegiate journalism’s preeminent award, the Pacemaker. There is a category for each type of publication – online, newspaper, yearbook and magazine. Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on the following criteria: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics.

“I’m so proud to be editor of one of the best 30 newspapers in the country,” said Trey Strange, editor in chief of The Cougar. “My predecessor, Glissette Santana, helped The Cougar reach new heights last year, and the current staff is working hard to keep the momentum going. We wouldn’t be here without the support of UH and the community.”

While Cooglife premiered in August 2015, the University’s student-run magazine is already turning heads; the magazine is one of the 20 finalists for the Magazine Pacemaker award.

“Cooglife has been such a great experience,” said Karis Johnson, editor of Cooglife. “We’ve been able to tap into the interests of the UH community in a new way. As UH grows, so does the need to connect students to what Houston has to offer. Cooglife has been a great way to show students that UH is Houston’s University.”

The Cougar is the oldest student tradition on campus and was last nominated for a Pacemaker in 2004. The Cougar is published every Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters, twice during the summer and online daily at thedailycougar.com. The Cougar is supported in part by Student Service Fees. The Cougar is editorially independent and student-run within the Center for Student Media.

Winners of the Pacemaker Award will be announced at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. Oct. 20-23, 2016.

The Center for Student Media (CSM) was created in Fall 2013 to provide comprehensive advisory and financial support to the university’s student-run media: The Daily Cougar newspaper, Student Video Network and COOG Radio. Part of the Student Life portfolio in the Division of Student Affairs, the CSM is concerned with the development of students, focusing on critical thinking, leadership, ethics, collaboration, intercultural competence, goal-setting and ultimately, degree attainment.
