December 3, 2013 - Pamelyn Klepal Shefman, Director of Assessment and Planning for the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services at the University of Houston, was voted chair-elect of the 2014-2015 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs for Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) during the organization's second election.
Shefman, a current member of the organization, will serve a two-year term, which includes one year as chair-elect and the second year as chair for the Administration Committee. SAAL is an organization that bridges both the National Association of Student Affairs Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Outside of SAAL, she currently serves as a volunteer member of the Assessment Committee for the 2014 NASPA Assessment and Persistence Conference to be held June 19-21 in San Antonio, TX. Shefman regularly presents at conferences about assessment practices for student affairs and will be co-presenting two workshops at the NASPA national conference held March 16-19, 2014 in Baltimore, MD.
In her statement for office, Shefman said she will actively engage and lead the organization. "As an attentive learner, I hope to provide outreach to members in support of new endeavors that advance assessment and planning into the activities of our profession. Furthermore, in becoming an active member of the team, I would use my years of experience in student affairs and academia to be a contributor to the board that includes being an active voice at conferences and through the support of the administrative needs of SAAL," she said.
"I joined SAAL during NASPA's Assessment and Persistence Conference in the summer of 2013 and have found it to be useful in grounding myself in my role and want to be supportive of that network for others. This role also helps facilitate a better understanding of SAAL and the resources we need to be cognizant of for the future of student affairs and I am interested in volunteering in a role that assists in the community's growth," Shefman concluded.
Shefman earned Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Ethics from Carnegie Mellon University and a master's degree in business administration from Duquesne University. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in educational psychology, with a concentration in higher education, at the University of Houston.
About SAAL: Student Affairs Assessment Leaders' main goal is to provide the opportunity for educators that coordinate assessments for divisions of student affairs to discuss issues to improve their work. The organization seeks to create an atmosphere where leaders can share and advance conversations related to creating division assessment infrastructure, supporting assessment projects, and documenting student learning as it relates to the academic mission.
