Upcoming Magazine Launch Event Featuring Latino cARTographies

Houston History magazine celebrates the return to in-person launch events on Thursday, October 27th at The Heritage Society. As in past years, the magazine brings together a panel to discuss historical topics from an article in its current issue in a location where the audience can experience the history. The upcoming event does just that by collaborating with the University of Houston Center for Public History (CPH), which publishes the magazine, the UH Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS), and The Heritage Society.

Thursday, Oct. 27th Reception at 5:30PM, Program 6:00PM-7:30PM

Houston History’s current issue includes the article, “Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past, Present, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art,” as part of CPH’s 100 Years of Stories: Documenting a Century at the University of Houston project.

The launch event will feature Latino cARTogrphies – the groundbreaking portable, bilingual and interactive digital public display created by CMALS that transports the viewer into the art where they can experience the board's interactive components, highlighting the intersection of art, community, and history.

The panel discussion will include distinguished guests:

· Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz, Director of CMALS, Executive Director of the national research consortium, the IUPLR, and UH Distinguished Professor of Sociology

· Juana Guzmán, former Vice-President of the National Museum of Mexican Art and collaborator on Latino cARTographies

· Laura Lopez Cano, Artist, whose works include the mural Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston featured on the digital board

· Jesse Sifuentes, Artist, whose works include the mural Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston featured on the digital board

· Mikaela Selley, Archivist and Public History Consultant, whose work includes numerous cultural heritage projects

The idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city to host the country’s premier Latino art event, Latino Art Now! She conceived the idea for the digital artscape and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to Houston’s Latino artists. Quiroz collaborated with Juana Guzmán and the International Gibson Group to create a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past, present, and future of Houston’s Latino art.

Everything on the board is meant to be touched and examined, featuring pop-up text, video, images, interactive art projects, hot spots, QR code links, special effects and even music! During the past three years, hundreds of hours of data have been collected by the CMALS Research Team in partnership and support of more than 170 Latino artists, 2,000 images, 7 Latino communities, 80 landmarks, 17 arts organizations, and other sites of importance to Houston’s Latino communities.
