Position: Houston History Magazine Work Study
Reports To: Houston History, Managing Editor – Welcome Wilson Houston History Collaborative
Salary: $11.00 - $12.00/ hour, or determined by supervisor
Job Status: Part Time (approx. 20 hours per week)
This position assists in producing the Houston History magazine and website by working with the staff to coordinate magazine content, social media, and web presence.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist in moving Houston History magazine through the publication process— 75%
a. Attend weekly staff meetings
b. Proofread and edit articles for upcoming issues of Houston History
c. Write and publish articles as agreed upon with managing editor
d. Select clips from interviews for use on magazine website
e. Assist with public events for Houston History as needed
f. Assist in planning issues for future publication
g. Assist in obtaining images for articles, writing captions, and doing additional research to verify or add to material in submitted articles.
h. Assist in conducting interviews when necessary.
2. Create web pages for magazine articles – 20%
a. Create and proofread web content for each article appearing in magazine. (training provided)
b. Select relevant digital material from the web to complement articles
c. Learn to create short films to accompany material on webpages
d. Complete cash and credit card handling training
3. Attend magazine events to launch new issues as needed and assist in sale of magazines. 5%
4. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

To perform the job successfully, an individual should have good communication skills, show initiative and adaptability, be results-oriented, and work well with others.
Successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously; communicates clearly and persuasively across all mediums, be detail oriented and contribute to building a positive collaborative environment.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
Must be pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree and have related administrative or clerical experience.
Language Ability:
Proficient in English, with good spelling and research skills. Spanish proficiency is a plus, but not a requirement.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
Computer Skills:
The individual should have demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word. Knowledge of WordPress and video/image editing is helpful but not required. The candidate must know how to perform basic research on the Internet.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 25 pounds. The employee spends the majority of the work hours sitting but is free to adjust his or her work station to stand. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Required Work Schedule
Work schedule to fit within normal CPH work hours: Weekdays, 9:00AM - 5:00PM. No weekends. On-campus only. Work schedule to be coordinated with the Magazine managing editor to ensure flexibility for student course work / class work.

This position organizes interviews for deposit in Special Collections in the MD Anderson library and transcribes audio oral history interviews collected for the Welcome Wilson Houston History Collaborative
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Organize and transcribe oral histories from inclusion in the Houston History Archives— 75%
a. Attend weekly staff meetings
b. Using audio of interviews, transcribe each in full, as needed
c. Research names of people, places, events, etc. to be sure that spelling is accurate
d. Write or edit abstracts if interviews as necessary
e. Edit audio recordings to remove extraneous personal conversation with interviewer before the interview begins or after it concludes
f. Pull short audio clips for use on magazine website.
g. Review interview transcripts for accuracy.
h. Move backlog interviews to the archives working with the editor of Houston History
g. Assist in conducting interviews when necessary
2. Assist in production of Houston History magazine. 20%
