Faculty Opportunities
to Increase Student
Success
A PAL (Personal Access Liaison)
e-mails a new student five times during
the first two semesters at UH to ask if the student is doing OK or if
they have
any problems. The PAL will have a list of answers for Frequently Asked
Questions and information about university resources to help the
student. In
addition, for more complicated issues, the PAL will have a
"problem-handling" contact. Each PAL will be asked to contact
4-6 students.
Help UH students get
through the toughest time of their college career - e-mail pals@mail.uh.edu to sign up.
As a PWP (Profs with Pride), a faculty member
promotes the university’s
events and accomplishments to his/her students. and encourages them to
engage
in campus activities. Information is available at https://blogs.uh.edu/pwp/ or www.uh.edu/tradingcards.
For more details
or to volunteer, contact Simon Bott at sbott@uh.edu.

Library Database Access
Due to security concerns about use of the Peoplesoft number to log-in
to library databases from off campus, a CougarNet log-in will be
required for authentication as of August 1, 2010. This will only
affect off-campus authentication. If you do not have an CougarNet
account or have forgotten your username and/or password, please call
Campus IT at 713-743-1411 or go to http://www.uh.edu/infotech/php/template.php?account_id=57
.
If you are faculty or staff of the University and use the University’s
Exchange email system for email and calendaring, this is the same
username and password. |
Accountability
Task Force Final Report
HB2504 mandates all Texas public universities to
provide certain information about undergraduate academic programs within
three clicks of the institute's home page.
This
includes class syllabi, instructor-of-record CVs and cost of attendance
(if available). The Accountability Task Force worked to meet
these new requirements and to improve awards for teaching excellence.

UH Faculty Responses
to
5%
Budget Reduction Plan
On
February 15, 2010 the University of Houston submitted its proposal for
the 5%
budget reduction to the Texas Legislative Budget Board. Prior to
submission a draft plan was circulated by the Faculty Senate to the
University
of Houston faculty with requests for feedback and recommendations for
more cost
saving ideas.

UH
Renovations
Proposed:
Fleming, Science
Building and
Science & Research I
Please
note that the last two slides, but one, present
timelines that may not take into account the requirement to go the our
Board,
the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the State Bond
Board.
We will try to do as much of this as feasible in parallel, but
local
approval policies will have to occur.

Policy for Dropping Courses
Effective Fall 2007
Beginning
this semester, a new policy
on dropping courses
will go into effect. This policy establishes a 6-'W'
grades
limit for all undergraduate
students.
The
six 'W'
grades may be used at any time during a student's undergraduate career
at UH to
drop a course up through the last
day to drop a course or withdraw from all courses deadline.
This
deadline falls approximately four weeks before the last class day of
the fall
and spring semesters.
The
'W'
may be granted upon the student's written request by the deadline,
regardless
of whether or not the student is passing the course. Once the 6
'W's have
been used
however, the student must complete all courses he or she is enrolled in
regardless of academic performance.
This
new policy is in alignment with
standards now in effect
at peer institutions to the University of Houston.
For
further information, see the policy and FAQs at
http://www.uh.edu/provost/stu/6-Ws_faq_stu.html
