How HPC Revolutionized Storm Surge Modeling

Thursday, August 29, 2024

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Storm surge modeling refers to computer models of flooding in coastal regions from hurricanes and tropical storms. This talk will provide a history of how parallel computing research in the mid-90s revolutionized storm surge modeling in the late 1990s and into the 2000s. The role HPC plays in the evolution of these models over the next five to ten years will also be discussed.

About the Speakers

Clint Dawson, Ph.D., is the Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. He directs the Computational Hydraulics Group at the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences and has authored over 200 technical articles on numerical analysis, parallel computing, and their applications in geosciences. Dawson’s work has significantly advanced coastal ocean modeling and hurricane storm surge predictions, earning him the 2024 University of Texas President’s Research Impact Award.
