Data Science and Machine Learning: Geophysical Inversion

Wednesday, February 10, 2021

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

About the Event:

Geophysicists are trained to conceptualize geophysical problems in detail. However, machine learning algorithms are more difficult to understand and are often thought of as simply “black boxes.” Brian Russell, Ph.D., will begin this lecture with a numerical example to illustrate the difference between geophysical and machine learning inversion, extending these methods to two real data examples. He will first perform post-stack seismic inversion and then predict density from multiple seismic attributes.

Speaker Bio:
Brian Russell holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of Saskatchewan (1975), a M.Sc. from Durham University (1978), and a Ph.D. from the University of Calgary (2004), all in geophysics.  He joined Chevron in Calgary as an exploration geophysicist in 1975 and subsequently worked for Teknica Resources and Veritas Seismic before co-founding Hampson-Russell Software with Dan Hampson in 1987.  HampsonRussell is now a fully owned subsidiary of CGG, where Brian is vice president, GeoSoftware.

Brian is involved in the research of new AVO, rock physics, inversion and machine learning techniques. He is a past president of both the SEG and CSEG and has received Honorary Membership from both societies, as well as the Cecil Green Enterprise Award from SEG (jointly with Dan Hampson) and the 1999 CSEG Medal.

From Noon - 12:30 p.m., the speaker will be available so that students may chat with him regarding their careers, skills and networking.
