Innovative Research Talk with Ben King
Thursday, January 16, 2025
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Ben King will discuss the results of his pilot project, “Identifying Opportunities for Interventions to Prevent Overdose Deaths Associated with Homelessness.”
People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are highly vulnerable members of the community, at increased risk of early mortality from multiple causes. Recent community reports highlight that acute drug toxicity, or overdose, is the leading cause of death identified for this section of our community in Harris County, TX, attributed to 51% of all PEH deaths identified. Many if not most community-based strategies and federal agency plans omit the members of communities experiencing homelessness. King investigates outcomes related to addiction in a population that sees heinous demographic disparities in treatment and, subsequently, some of the greatest risks of disease and early mortality observed in the developing world.
