Environmental Justice, Cumulative Risk and Impacts in Houston

Loren Hopkins will discuss environmental justice, cumulative risks and cumulative impacts. She will describe national efforts and present two key local examples of the need for action: Union Pacific Railroad cancer cluster site and communities near concrete batch plants. She will describe the environmental justice concerns, progress and challenges in remedying the situation and research needs to support further progress.

About the Speaker

Loren Hopkins is a nationally recognized expert in environmental health. She is a professor in the practice of statistics at Rice University, and Chief Environmental Science Officer for the City of Houston. In this dual capacity she conducts research at the intersection of pollution and health to inform policy and action. Hopkins teaches environmental statistics and human health risk assessment, leads the city’s health and pollution data systems and data science division. Hopkins serves on the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Committee on wastewater, and the EPA’s National Environmental Justice Advisory Council.
