Basketball facility construction heads into last few months

By Richard Zagrzecki

The completion of the University of Houston Basketball Development Facility is now less than 100 days away.

The $25 million project at the intersection of Cullen Boulevard and Holman Street will be home for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. It is projected to be finished by mid-November and could be fully occupied in early December. Austin Commercial is the contractor.

“At this point, the exterior work on the building is 75 percent completed and interior finishes have begun,” Senior Project Manager Trent Williams said.

The first floor of the 53,000-square-foot building, which sits adjacent to Hofheinz Pavilion, will house two basketball courts to be used by the men’s and women’s teams. It will also include a training room, strength-conditioning area, and non-staff lockers for such personnel as graduate assistants, trainers and managers.

The second floor will contain the team spaces, including the locker rooms, equipment rooms, lounges and film-study rooms. The third floor will house the offices for the coaching staff.

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to help the Cougars remain competitive in the American Athletic Conference and positively impacting the recruiting process.
