Recycling and Solid Waste

The Recycling and Solid Waste Shop is responsible for processing tons of trash and recycled goods generated by the central campus.

Items accepted for recycling include:
  • Paper (newspaper, copy paper, shredded paper, magazines, telephone books, envelopes)
  • Plastic (water bottles)
  • Batteries
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminum cans
  • Milk cartons

In 2008, the university participated in RecycleMania, a nation-wide contest between institutions of higher education, and helped to heighten awareness about the importance of recycling and going green. Faculty, students and staff made a concentrated effort to incorporate recycling into their lifestyles. By the time the ten-week competition ended, UH came in third within Texas as the institution that accumulated the most recyclable trash.
