Whole Foods Community Giving Day to Aid Garden

Whole Foods DayAs part of Whole Foods Market’s commitment to the community, individual stores host Community Giving Days, donating a portion of net sales to local nonprofits. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, 10 participating Whole Foods Market locations will each donate 5 percent of their sales to the University of Houston Campus Community Garden.

“Whole Foods Market is excited to expand its Community Giving Day to all Houston-area locations to raise awareness of UH sustainability-related programs,” said Melissa Halstead, sustainability coordinator at the UH Office of Sustainability.

Community Giving Day is part of Whole Foods Market’s commitment to support local organizations that address community issues such as hunger relief, environmental concerns, organic and sustainable agriculture, animal rights and welfare and social services. Community Giving Days are held once every quarter.

This is the third year in which Whole Foods Market will be dedicating a Community Giving Day to a UH program. The more people who shop at participating Whole Foods Market stores on Community Giving Day, the greater the donation will be. Office of Sustainability representatives will also be at the participating stores to provide guests with gardening tips and resources.

“These donations will not only benefit the UH Campus Community Garden by improving organic methods and produce production, it will also help the surrounding food desert where all our fresh produce is donated,” said Halstead. “We hope the UH community continues this tradition, and we encourage all Houstonians to shop at Whole Foods Market on Oct. 5.”

Located near Cougar Woods Dining Hall, the Campus Community Garden is devoted to growing organic produce and educating campus and community members about healthy living. Food grown in the garden is donated to local food pantries and facilities serving low-income families and individuals. Members of the Office of Sustainability, as well as students and community volunteers, regularly assist in harvesting, weeding and planting.
