COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this class is to provide the student with beginning level knowledge and skill in badminton. As a result of the class the student will improve their general physical fitness and skill performance. Principles, techniques, safe practices and strategies of badminton will be taught throughout the class.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To develop an improved level of physical fitness.

2. To be able to execute the basic strokes (e.g., serves, drops, smash, etc.)

3. To develop an understanding of the terminology, rules, and etiquette of the game.

4. To participate and enjoy the activity.

DRESS CODE

Suitable clothing for athletic activity such as T-shirt or sweatshirt, gym shorts or sweatpants, and appropriate footwear are required. Students without proper clothing are not allowed to participate in the class and will be considered absent for the day. No eating or gums are permitted during class time.

GRADING

1. The final grade is determined by the following criteria:

20% attendance; 60% skills (serves, clear, smash, etc.); and 20% written test

2. Health and Human Performance Department Absentee Policy:

• No attendance makes up is permitted.

• To normally drop a student on the 7th academic hour of class misses (i.e., M-W-F classes meet for 1 hour/day; T-Th meet for 11/2 hours; therefore an 1 hour class absence = 1 miss, an 11/2 hours absence = 11/2 misses).

• Each late arrival or early departure will be counted as 1/2 absence.

3. After two absences, each additional miss will result in 5% being deducted from your total grade.

4. In this course you may choose either a letter grade or the S/U option. The "S" or "U" will not be used in calculating your GPA. You will not receive an "S" if the absentee policy is not met. The decision for this grade must be contracted by the student with the instructor by the last formal class day. Once a grade has been issued, no S/U to letter grade (or letter grade to S/U) change option will be permitted.
