Mentored Research Programs

Venues for student research dissemination will continue to be expanded.  Faculty and staff mentors should encourage their students to participate in showcase opportunities on and off campus.  Whether via delivery of oral, written, performance, digital, or multi-media presentations, students who participate in these activities with strengthen their communication skills.  Some examples of venues and programs for research dissemination include:

College and Department Student Research Showcase
Limited funding is available to support prizes for poster competitions or showcases for undergraduates at the department or college level.  Contact discovery@uh.edu for more information.

Undergraduate Research Day
The campus-wide Undergraduate Research Day showcases poster, oral, and creative presentations from our talented students.  The event will continue to be expanded in coming years.  This year, the event took place on October 2, 2008 at the Rockwell Pavilion, M.D. Anderson Library.  The event was hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Honors College.  Additional support for the event was provided by the Office of Undergraduate Discovery Programs and the Division of Research.

Student Travel Fellowships
A Student Travel Fellowship program will provide travel support to undergraduates who have been selected for presentation at national conferences or exhibitions.  Guidelines and applications will be posted when available in February 2009.

Posters on the Hill
The Office of Undergraduate Discovery Programs will provide travel support if a UH student is selected to participate in the annual Posters on the Hill event. The Council on Undergraduate Research hosts an undergraduate poster session on Capitol Hill.  Selected students from institutions across the nation will have an opportunity to showcase their research and talk to members of Congress and representatives from federal funding agencies.  http://www.cur.org/pohcall.html

Focus on Students Highlights
Share your 2008-2009 highlights and accolades about undergraduate researchers or project team that you mentored.   Please submit all entries and photos to discovery@uh.edu.  We will compile the information for posting on the Discovery website.

  • Citation and abstract of published research that includes undergraduate co-authors on peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and oral or poster presentations abstracts from conferences. Please indicate undergraduates with an asterisk (*).
  • Patent applications submitted or awarded with undergraduate co-inventors. Please indicate undergraduates with an asterisk (*).
  • Prize-winning student research projects, exhibits, presentations, etc. Please provide title, student’s name, major and classification, brief summary of project, faculty mentor, and nature of accolade. 
  • Other highlights or accolades involving undergraduates scholars that you wish to share.
