Expectations and Format
This distance learning course is provided by the University of Houston. It will be conducted entirely via the internet on a one-to-one basis between student and professor. It is possible that we will have some chat sessions later in the semester if all stystems are working well, but they will not be required.
Abnormal psychology as a topic is extremely broad and it has been trimmed, mainly by the contents of the textbook we will use. My own emphasis for the course is in line with the emphasis of the textbook. The emphasis will be on the scientific study of the forms of human behavior and experience that we call abnormal.  This means that many forms of psychology will not been considered because they lack standing in the scientific community.  The scientific approach is the one taken by faculty in nearly all universities in America if not in the entire world. It has been enormously sucessful in leading to the discovery of the causes of abnormal behaviors and to effective treatments. The field has changed almost entirely in the last thirty years.
