Psycho-sociological Arguments

FREUDIAN VERSION: "Religious belief is the result of immature wishful thinking, the desire for an invincible father-figure to take care of one."

MARXIST VERSION: "Religion is the opiate of the masses. It is designed by those in power to make the oppressed content with their lot."

GENERIC VERSION:

(a) Irrational factors produce belief in God.
(b) Therefore belief in God is false.

Objection 1: Premise (a) questionable

Freudian and Marxist theory are controversial at best. I reject them, as most social scientists do. Reply

Objection 2: Conclusion (b) does not follow from premise (a)

Even if every theistic belief is arrived at by irrational means, it does not follow that theistic belief is false. Reply
